Axle breakage . Is it a normal thing to happen or not . I had someone today say that with the 32's on i will bust axles . I have never heard of a disco breaking an axle ? Have any of you guys busted any axles ?

You will be fine. My 90 runs the same axles, as your D1, and I run 33's all the time, and 35's very occasionally.
I have only broken 1 long rear and thats it so far!

You can break any axle in a rover. Even Maxidrives.

Just in the LROC TT crowd (not necessarily on LROC TT trips though), there has been heaps of LR 10 spline rears broken, a couple of LR 24 splines in D1 and D2 broken, 1 twisted Maxi Drive in a Salisbury, 1 twisted Maxidrive with a Defender P38 rear, 1 snapped Maxidrive in a D1 front and 1 snapped MaxiDrive in a Salisbury rear.
I'd be more worried about classic rear lower links though. Even the HD ones can fold up, but the LR ones do it fairly easily.

Does that make the LROC TT crowd experts at breaking axles?

No, not at all. Dave Ashcroft is the expert at breaking axles. :D I talk about this crowd only they are the people that I usually drive with on club trips and on social drives away from the club.
Actually, you'd be surprised sometimes at what it doesn't take to break an axle.
The D1 front Maxidrive was on a non-TT. A muddy wet slippery as all getout hill climb and the wheel just stopped wedged in a rut and the engine torque just snapped it.
Salisbury rear Maxidrive was done on a hard dry gritty trail that I slipped over on. During a snatch recovery, the strap pulled down on the back of the Defender which was on the crest, which loaded it up with enough traction to snap the axle while the diffed out vehicle being recovered remained stuck.

I'd suggest that some of those axles were probably stressed at some time prior to the actual breakage. The only axle that I've broken was in a Series 2A on Windsor Rd at Baulkham Hills.

The landrover axles are said to be weak but i haven't broken one yet.I say yet as with the lockers i am likely to which if happens i will upgrade to stronger axles and hope for the best.;)

I keep a 20mm long piece of the Turdis' axle in the cubby box in the County as a reminder not to use so much right foot. It doesn't work.

I run 32's (actually 31 1/2") all the time and I check the rears every now and then to see if there is any twist in the weaker points of the axel and so far there hasnt been any signs of problems the fronts are a bit more of an issue to check and I havnt had them out to check.
This isnt the be all and end all though as shock load may not show up as a twisted axel.
I have seen a broken 24 spline though in a Disco due to it hopping up a rocky ledge and it broke off 2" or so from the spline, a real pain to get out as well.
If you run lockers your more likely to break them I believe but again I cant back that up as I dont have lockers and I havnt broken one as yet.
Hope that helps.

My opinion is that it depends on how you drive with the lockers. I think that if a lock just drives you through without the bucking, jumping and carrying on that an unlocked vehicle may get, then it will be easier on the axles. If you buck and jump while locked then it is significantly harder on the axle.

My old man did the same thing in his series three. Just done the brakes up and went for a test. Braked hard then dropped back from 4th to 2nd and accelerated, BANG:)

Funny you should mention that Slunnie the only time I have busted a axle has been recovering someone else:mad:

Being a 91 model are you still running the 10 splines or have you upgraded to the 24 spline?

OK i was going to go down to Carrara in the next couple weeks to discuss a set of Maxi Axles but am now worried a little, are they still the best way to go or should i be looking else where.

Maxi are as good as they come. I believe the axle designs are excellent while operating within the constraints of it needing to fit a Rover. The Hytuff alloy steel used is excellent also, and better than the EN25, 4140 and 4340 used by others that do aftermarket HD axles. Ashcroft do get better outright strength using 4340 though, I suspect this is due to the way Dave heat treats, and likewise the way Maxi heat treat. .
