OH NO.......These houses in Brooklyn Green is only about 1.5kms away from our house.
I cant understand why these people built there in the first place as the joint smells like a tip all the time and has for as long as Ive been here before the houses were and the blocks were hugely over priced and made out it was upper class.
I dont know why the council let it through and I dont understand why the EPA didnt stop it from going ahead.
I wouldnt want to be the developer who is going to cop it big time.
Funny thing is that there is absolutely nothing in the local papers about it.

Trouble is, the developer's got his money, it was all ok'd by council, so they probably haven't got much to get him with (legally). I'd feel pretty upset if I was the owners.

Look dont get me wrong, I feel for the families big time.
You cant expect the council to take the blame, i bet they dont stop charging rates on the properties either.
The owners are in a closed door meeting at the moment with the council, CFA and EPA.
What a giant screw up this is.

Whats happening is that a whole housing estate just south of our house has to move out due to Methane leaching from an old land fill site which is getting into houses and getting concentrated into dangerous levels.

How the heck ... does a developer make an application to your local shire and your governing state planning commission to develop & register titles to blocks of land located on a old land fill site (Tip) ..... & nobody new about it???
Oh ... Question answered as I just read the above MrRover thread that came in at the same time as mine
Quote .... Casey Council objected to developers building so close to landfill, and foresaw a problem with methane gas leaking out of the site, but its decision was overturned at the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal.
Look's like your VCA tribunal are on the ball here ... Have they got a mini bar in there office or something

What was that...
Oh just Cranbourne, look its raining houses outside. Is that Mcrovers radiator on our neighbours house??.
I just had a look at my 1924 army 1" to 1 mile map and there is a sand pit just to the north and that area was a boggy swamp.

The development was rejected by Council but the Developer took Council to VCAT who allowed the development to proceed.
The houses are actually adjacent to the fill site, not on top of it.

sounds like it's going to be one hell of a legal fight between the local council and VCA who overturned their decision on the development plans,Mcrover I also feel for the families too who have nowhere else to go...

its cranbourne so really we would all be better off if the place did dissapear off the map!!!, cranbourne should have a bypass anyway so you can just drive around it on the way to the island instead of wasting 15 mins of your life that you wont get back driving through it

very interesting - but the initial explanation was without actual explanation, as if people already knew what the hell you were on about.
this bit is insane
"Casey Council objected to developers building so close to landfill, and foresaw a problem with methane gas leaking out of the site, but its decision was overturned at the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal.
"Developers' interest in huge growth areas around the Casey corridor actually override a normal, logical, commonsense approach and VCAT itself has taken the issue out of community's hands,'' he said."

I can tell you how to save that 15min.
Go out the new princess fwy to the 2nd Pakenham exit, the one that says KooWeeRup exit, and go thru KooWeeRup.
Might be a bit longer but probably less fuel used ;)

Another way of missing Cranbourne is to take the third Berwick exit, down Clyde road/Clyde-Fiveways Road and come out at Fiveways on the South Gippy Hwy.
Or take the Narre/Fountain Gate turnoff and head down the Narre Cranbourne Road skirting the edge Cranbourne. Getting a bit busy now and also maybe a bit too close when she blows......
Queuing through Cranbourne is a PITA......

There was a large landfill site now disused and covered over
Landfill produces Methane Gas amongst others from the decomposing matter in the landfill
Methane Gas seeps upwards from the fill into the atmosphere
Whilst Council fitted Methane Gas extractors to try and control the gas seepage its not coping with the amount of gas leaving site
EPA reduced the from 500 to 200 metres from the boundary of the old landfill where they could build houses, the methane gas is seeping into the houses built close to the tip boudnary.
Methane Gas with concentrations of 5 to 15% is an explosive mix and it fills wall cavity cupboards etc less than 5% and over 15% methane gas wont explode.
Will take a year or more for Council to rectify the situation so houses have to be evacuated in the meantime as no known method of determining where the gas will seep.

Just another example of those who are supposedly making sure that controls are adhered to are allowing developements in unsuitable places.
It's happened a lot here in the West.... building on 100 year flood plains and then Oh dear! They get flooded twice in the same year!
Building allowed to go as close as 50 meters to chook farms then the residents complain of the stink (couldn't they see the chook farm when they went to buy a block and did they have nose pegs on???) and then the council wants the chook farm to move at massive expence (but not to the councillors who allowed the building of course) and get upset when they won't just move.
Many, many examples of those in public office here not doing their duty but getting fat from the backhanders from developers, land owners, fast food outlets, oil companies etc., by allowing rezoning, not that I'm saying that went on in this case of course.
They make common crims. look good in comparison.

Where that sand pit bottom left below the sand hill is where the land fill site was, the sand hill is still in the sth east corner of Amstel Golf Club I believe.
I dont know if the whole of cranny will go but Im about 1 to 1.5 kms away so I should get a bit of debri, hopefully a spa or new dishwasher or something :)

Well then we should be safe from explosion because they are measuring levels as high as 60% methane

They do the same with Golf Courses.
We got a nasty letter from a developer the other week as we have put a huge mound along the boundry between the fence and a green.
He's peeved as he recons it has lowered the value of his properties and is demanding that the council make us remove it due to us not having a permit.
The thing is that when we approached council about it they said we didnt need a permit but now they are looking into it further.
I have also been involved with clubs that have had to buy electric mowers and change their cutting patterns because houses are built next to the course and then they dont like to get woken up in the morning when the mower is getting the green.
Just heard that the residents are getting an $8500 moving grant to help them relocate.
The major problem they will find is that there is a major shortage of rental properties at the moment here as well.
By the way Chris, not quite the right area to get rid of the bogans, they are a bit further due north from there and they all drive Commodores :wasntme:

I realised a colleague ( & I consider one of the better ones) lives about 250m from the landfill and therefore in the danger zone. Strangely enough I have been the only person so far to ring & offer help or support ( I said the landie could be used if they had to move furniture etc & they were welcome to doss at our place if they had to move in the middle of the night), no relatives have rung and most at work know where she lives too. I said they all probably thought everyone else was ringing her & maybe they should give her some space, but I was the only one who rang anyway.
She is normally a rock solid person but I think my call brought it all to the surface and the emotions flowed. :BigCry::BigCry:.
It really makes you think..

Yeah it really does make you think.....
I couldnt imagine what I would do if it was to happen to me.
The worst thing will be that the banks will still need to be paid their mortgage payments and the owners will need to rent a place as well as find people to help them move that will go there to do it.
One of the young blokes at work lives in the area but in the safe zone closer to Franger road but only about 200m away is one of the houses thats already been evacuated.
Ive always thought it was a bit odd to build houses so close to an ex landfill site but you assume that they know what they are doing when they build these places.

Amazing the lengths the coucil will go to to keep developers happy, and I would expect you will soon find that they are having to move a dirt mound.

The thing is that we put the mound in to reduce the amount of balls going to the boundry and to act as a noise barrier so the residents dont crack it when we cut greens at 5am.
I can just feel it, we will be forced to knock down the mound only to have a resident complain at some time after and the council force us to do something to drop the noise levels.
I dont know where we are with it yet, the higher ups are not very happy about it so it must be at the serious levels.

We havnt ever had any complaints other than when we were doing a shoot one afternoon and a bloke 2kms away from us reconed that he had shot landing on his roof
Yes he was telling porkys as we were shooting rabbits, 2kms from his house and at the time facing away from his house as we always when on the boundry shoot into the course rather than out onto the road :p
When he rang the cops he was told that it's ok they have a permit lol and so he went and bothered the manager who rang us and told us to stop.

Ok for those that dont know the area, Cranbourne/Frankston Rd (Franger rd is a lot quicker to typy) is called Cranny Rd when your in Franger :D

Ever seen how many are all around all the suburbs around any city anywhere in australia?
About the same as here, Ringwood, Boronia, Mooroolbark, Sunshine or Blackburn.
Funny that, they have sex everywhere even Toorak has teenage pregnancy issues it's not just Cranny.
There are a lot of young families down here but that might be because Casey is the fastest growing municipality (sp?) in Melbourne and there for has the most young families but not that many more kids with prams that I have noticed elsewhere.
But I must say, there are more ferals down this way more than anywhere else I have lived, even Mt Evelyn.
