Hi all just bought a 85 V8 county for a grand its been sitting for three years so it needs some tlc but my big problem is I had some tappet noise so i put some lifter free in and it made no difference so I pulled the manifold and valley gasket off to discover bent push rods and the cam shaft is shagged, so what to do. The gearbox is the LT85 what engines will bolt up to it easily diesel or petrol can anyone help with that, other option is rebuild/stroker kit anyone done this (price and avalibility) all work I will do myself. Thanks guys

Your cheapest option is to rebuild or replace the v8 in the car. A cam isn't expensive for them. If you lived up here I'd give you a 3.5 short engine with cam (I think I may have the push rods, too). I bought it a few years back to build up for my County which I ended up selling. It was supposed to have had a new cam, etc., fitted. I don't know.

If someone can take it to Albury, you can have it.

Bugger! That kills the chance for me to empty my garage a little! :D

If I still had the County, my spare 4.6 would be going into it.

Oh, there was a Discovery in the wrecking yard in Alice. I wonder if it's still there and if so, what engine it had?

Probably not much call for Land Rover V8s in Alice!

There's a 4.6 on eBay at the moment. A rebuild will make your car seem like a whole lot less of a bargain.

Another thought- there's a mechanic in Kununurra- used to be the LR dealer- who offered me a complete series 1 discovery for $800 a couple of months back. If I remeber right, he bought this vehicle with a stuffed gearbox, had another with a good gearbox, was going to put the 2 together but changed his plans for some reason. I was directed to him when I was looking for an oil pressure sender, he still has racks and racks of LR parts in his workshop, good guy to deal with, gave me a second-hand sender for nix and let me use his workshop hoist to check out an oil leak. Offered me the whole disco for $800, said there's no market for them up there. Had the dicky seats in the back and everything. Would have cost me thousands to bring the thing home, but Kununurra is a whole lot closer to Darwin than it is to Drouin. Can't remember the name of the business, but any mechanic in Kununurra would be able to tell you who used to be the LR dealer.
