View Full Version : Gauges

I've done quite a search, but I ended up getting myself mostly confused across the various models. My vehicle is a 93 200tDi Defender for those that don't know.

I am looking at putting a mud dash into the old girl. Whilst doing this I am going to put in some gauges to keep an eye on some things. What I am trying to do is the following:

Dual Battery Gauge - easy enough
Smart Tire Gauge - easy enough
Watchdog System - easy enough

Tacho - which one actually fits and works? I've got a couple of ideas, but it'd be easier if someone here has actually done it.

Coolant temperature - I really don't trust the standard one, and I'm looking at changing it to something more accurate.

LT230 temp gauge - this is the one that's throwing me more than anything. I'm not sure where it would mount, what sender to use, which gauge - mainly because I'm not sure of what temps it runs. And for those that wonder why, I've already managed to destroy a total box up in the NT a few years ago, and I'm not about to repeat that experience (even if it did get me Maxi-Drive low range and Disco high range).

Thanks in advance for your help

Cheers
Chris

Does the LT230 have a temp sensor like the BW transfer case used on the P38A?

The later LT230 have a fluid temperature sensor

Not that I'm aware of on my old girl - mind you it's been a few years since I rebuilt her now ;)

Where did you tap into the case?

the bung in the top of the thermostat

i believe a vdo one will fit straight into the existing hole that the temp sensor screws into

i brought a speco one

Defenders have never had one. ;)

I think Mr Wilson is asking about the/case weeds :D

Re the engine temp gauge, I think the 200tdi sender location is a different size/pitch than the 300Tdi, which is 1/8-27 NPTF, and luckily is what is the standard size with VDO and apparently Speco mechanical gauges.

AFAIK, the temp sender fits where the plug is on the left side of the input housing (about the level of the bottom of the PTO flange).

Sorry I don't know the temp range for a suitable gauge, but whatever is normal for oil temp service can't be far wrong.
