Hi I'm new around here and i like this forum a lot.
I'm a member from the Dutch Landrover owner club as well. Land Rover Club Holland (http://www.lrch.nl)

My name is Jeroen and i'm from holland.

Next year i'm coming to Australia for 3 months and i want to take my
Land Rover Discovery 2 from 2000, td5 with me.

I want to drive it from Adelaide till Cape York and want to do some tracks as well.

It's fitted with all terrain tyre's, two spares, TJM coils and springs, TJM T15 bumper and a winch.

Can it be done and what are the problems i can get?
And is it possible to get the most stuff when something brakes or something?
Are there many dealers around in that area?

Hope to hear from ya.

Thanks allready

Jeroen

Dealers are only in major citys.
Parts you can get and there is a wealth ofknowledge on here for that.
The Landy can do it. Just make sure it's in good nick and you have the basic spares.
Look at the cccc threads for ideas.
they are in the trips section.

Hello George,

Thanks for your quick reaction.

It's in a good condition.
There are BF Goodrich AT tyres on it, with the size 245/75/16.
Is that a problem?

thanks allready

The tyres will be fine. A little slippery potentially in some places, but you will be ok.

On recommendation I will make though, is if you want to tour Cape York and the deserts then I would fit a snorkel. This will keep the water out of your engine in the many deepwater crossings at the Cape, and some of the dust out in the outback.

I am not 100% sure of this but I think one of the forum members works for a Land Rover Dealer in Alice Springs. Depending on what route you take you might go through Alice Springs so could be worth popping in to see him.

If you post your route in a thread I am sure people would be happy to point out where their preferred Land Rover mechanics are near your route, in case of trouble. Most people on this forum seem to avoid dealers.

Also what sort of time frame are you looking at? You never know there might be someone else on the forum going at the same time who could buddy up with you. The cape has two seasons (wet and dry) and the driving is much more difficult in the wet (Nov to April I think).

Internet addresses for what?

people, places sites?

Get rock sliders etc here, second is easy and will get scratched on first outing.

PM me and I give you e-mail address and more info, may also have some accomodation in our sleepout.

Anyhow, see what happens.

:):) G'day Mate,

I have just returned from a trip to the Cape in my 2004 Disco diesel, towing a camper trailer.

The disco did me proud with no problems, including the run down the Overland Telegraph Track, which is a pretty rough track.

LandRover support is available at Cairns, and parts can be trucked in from there to the Cape if needed (3-10 days). Qualified mechanics are a bit short after you leave Cairns, but if you have top level NRMA or RACQ cover, there is quite a bit of support available.

Have your truck thoroughly checked out by a good mechanic before you leave the big smoke, and you shouldn't have any dramas.

Cheers,

Dodge

Jeroen,

You did not say what tyre size you run - I assume 235/70 (29") - you could have some ground clearance issues - nothing drastic, you just might bottom out or get hung up and require snatching. Personally, I would prefer to run (and do) 265/75's and find that I rarely ever bottom out with this tyre size.

I also think you have a left hand drive vehicle and would check to see if there are any critical parts that may be different and therefore not available here.

Cheers,

Franz

Hi Jeroen - that will be an excellent adventure :D

There are a number of LR places in Adelaide who will be able to get work done on your Disco. Once you leave Adelaide it's probably 1000Km (?) until the next LR place! Way different than Holland.

As long as it's properly serviced and you've got the basic spares you'll get up there no worries. We did it 5 years ago in our old Disco 300TDi. Just take it steadily.

Are you looking for suggestions on the route to take or places to visit with your request for internet addresses?

Cheers
David (from Adelaide!)

Hi Franz,

I'm running on 245/75/R16 BF Goodrich tire's and have a 2" lift from TJM.
For the rest of your tips thanks and will look after it.

Cheers 2.

Hi David,

Yes i'm looking forward to the trip.
1000 k's is way different than in holland, the longest distance till the next dealer is about 75 k's :D

I'm looking for adresses for routes and stuff for my D2. (tent, roofrack, rocksliders) Want to compare the prices with the prices over here.

you'll be fine, Dealers here are not as useful, in general, as european ones but we do have some excelent guys who work non dealer side and if you do the intro thing on the way around and the word hits AULRO that your a good bloke and you'll get access to a support network that you cant even imagine.

Sorry for the late answer Discostew,

I´m looking at a time frame of 3 months.
When i´m at Adelaide i will put down a line if there are any other people that are gonna do some tracks.

I will be at the cape at half july i think, so that would be the dry season:)

In answer to your rock slider question, a lot of people dont have sliders. Just side steps..

Some of us with sliders use 4x4 intelligence, others use some UK stuff and a few made their own...

Thanks for your tips Tombie2,

Your right about 4x4 intelligence. But are the sliders expensive in Australia.

Hi

I got your pm.

Still advise you perhaps consider getting a Disco here, have it checked, do the trip and sell it again.

I know several people who done that.
there is currently a great looking tdi for sale on this web-site.

It belongs to a member that from what little I know is pretty well respected.

Who knows, you may even make a buck when you sell it.

Go to a web site called triumph rover spares.
They are in SA and have huge range, they will get sliders in from time to time, just get a 2nd hand set. Thats how they will look after the first outing anyway.

Clearance can be difficult here interms of height over stuff, make sure you have communication equipment, maybe even a sat phone. They can be hired pretty cheaply or perhaps put feelers out for some other guys heading up there.

Just food for thought.
