squeeling brakes

My tdi is making a light annoying squeeling noise I have taken the front and rear wheels off thinking it is the brakes, But there is heaps a meat left on the pads at least 10mm on all four pads.

When I drive along the road after about 2 minutes or quicker the squeeling starts I touch the brake pedal and it goes away I slightly turn the steering wheel and it goes away.

Does any one have any ideas?

Looking at Elmo I am hoping its not a wheel bearing ( previous thread )but it been doing it a for a couple of weeks now.

Might pay to check the wheel bearings just incase and catch them early so it doesn't cost as much to fix ;).

EDIT: I should of checked emlo's when i first bought him but was lazy . there was next to no grease on the bearings when i pulled it apart the other day

mate Ive had the same problem on and off since Ive had mine...and it comes and goes every time l take it to someone it makes a bloody liar out of me ;)....ive had the hubs checked but there all good ...and as they have said ?...if the you jake it up ad turn the wheel and there is no noise ...then its not the hubs?? ;)

any other ideas for the man and not to hi jake Rad's thread but all of us with the problem??

Mine does this too. Has done for many months. I've checked the bearings and replaced the rears (which needed it). Pads are fine.

If you touch the brake pedal even just the slightest amount the noise stops. It is intermittent otherwise.

I'm not sure if it comes from front or rear.

I assume one of the rotors is warped.

I've heard a few Disco1s making the same noise under the same conditions.

Funny you should mention it.
Mine did the same and drove me to distraction:(.

I finally changed the rear pads on Monday as although they only seemed a bit low they were low enough that I thought it might have been the telltale anti rattle clips squealing on the disc.

I found embedded in one of the old pads what looked to be a snip off the end of the large split pins retaining the pads, presumeably landed there at the last pad change and driving the previous owner batty a lot longer than me :p.

Mine isn't rocks in the pads. Rears were replaced as they were low and fronts have been checked and roughed up a couple of times.
Rear pads are even genuine LR. Don't know about front as they were on there when I bought it.
Squealed before and after this work was done.

Hi, check your metal backing plates which come pretty close to the discs - act as scrapers. These often crack with corrugated roads and intermittentantly touch the discs. I have had to replace these on both my Disco and Defender due to this. Cheers, Bundalene.

I had squeeling brakes on my S1 Disco a years ago - was found to be due to glazed rotors. Apparantly caused by too much driving in sand and fine dust.
Roughing up both the rotors and the pads with some abrasive paper solved the problem.

May be worth loking at.
