G'day all, well went for a play drive today and the awful happened. As I was going through a dry creek crossing, bang, all over. :(

Now what do we recon I'm looking at for a new one?

Easo, If it helps, D1's 1994/5 onwards have the same inner axles and CV's...Some haven't seen as much hard work as Defenders, therefore good used ones may be quite OK and Cheap. If I had one, I'd sell it for about $140 including CV. Axle would be $50 on its own.

fyi, im in the process of replacing my broken bits also, but i have 2nd hand spares. if you get 2nd hand ones go for the new td5 axles they are 5mm bigger in diameter than the std D1 shafts. same for the rear shafts.
they are all still 32/24 and 24 for the rear but there isnt any undercut from the rear of the splines.

No undercut will make them weaker despite having more material.

This full diameter design is weaker because it concentrates the stresses into the root of the splines and it will probably break before a waisted design.

Where the design in the top shaft dia allows the forces to be spread evenly through the whole axle shaft. The bottom shaft is different, to suit a locking dog arrangement.

To some speculation, I tend to think that if a 24/32 front axle was waited down to match the root dia of the 32 spline end, that it would be a more durable design also.

the axles are still waisted just not as much as the early ones.
its the sharpness at the end of the splines that is the downfall..

I just got a set of second hand front axles and CV's from ebay, cost $50 plus shipping.

Pulled it all to bits today and it's not the axle, it the CV. Two cracks in the guts of it.

I've personally been waiting for the company in America (bloody memory) that makes them and the axles together so I can replace mine. However they are a tad dearer, but meant to be brilliant.
