Who'd have thought visiting AULRO would prove so expensive!

He's in NZ, so might have to try a local suppler.......

What are the negatives of True Tracs. There most be something. Or else you wouldn't have the alternatives.

Whats the negatives to Landies and Commodores? Or else you wouldnt have alternatives

:wasntme:

Each company is trying to make money... They release a product they think the public would like... Thats the basics...

Then it comes down to performance requirements...

Tru Tracs and Detroits are Auto LSD and Locker respectively.

Alternates are manual, electronic, etc....

Comes down to what you want to do, where you want to do it, cost etc...

Ahebron,
I am extremely happy with the Trutrac. It has been able to get me out of a number of holes where I would have to have been snatched on previous occasions.

I have not yet been in the position of having 1 rear wheel off the ground and losing traction or drive from the TT (the 1 minor failing of the TT) Although using braking technique will help this I'm told. I can see how traction control would really eliminate this problem on later models.
Great value $700 landed and installed. Enough change from a manual locker cost to order a front one, although Aussie dollar exchange effecting this.
I am happy with my current setup of the vehicle but my next investment will be a taller set of tyres with MT tread. The 235/75/16 BFG AT's just don't have enough axle clearnce my biggest problem.

PS any body know a good CHEAP set of MT's, (as a 2nd set) was looking at remoulds but motorway have gone out of business. 245/75/16's. Not interested in spending anymore than $200 a tyre, and preferrably less.
It seems prices in Vic are dearer than other states, not sure why.

I recently fitted a set of Hercules Terra Tracs, 245/75R16, a set of 5 cost $880:D.

I don't much believe in expensive tyres on a 4WD either, I'd rather replace cheapies more often as they lose their edge, and long before they go hard.

Now our dollar has dragged itself back off the floor I have ordered a TT for the rear of my 97 300TDi auto. Keith reckons should be here in 15 days. Hope to fit it before our trip to the South Island next month.:)
I was reminded about them when talking to a work colleague who mentioned getting a rear locker for his 110 CSW. Odd 110 it is, 1989 V8 with factory fitted Range Rover front seats in the front and rear also has standard glass opening sunroof over the driver and a bad condition full length sliding fabric Webasto type roof in the rear. I hope I have convinced him to keep the roof.;)

I still have my Detroit Locker in the shed, waiting for more coin to order the axles first. This way the rear axel is bullet proof :D

it that Eastbourne in Wellington?

I'm a Karori boy myself..is the track out the south coast past Owhiro Bay, through Devils Gap still open?
Used to be a great 4wd playground out there..very close to the city too.

Yeah Eastbourne Wellington, the south coast is still open but not maintained except for major slips. Devils gap was getting bad last time I went round the coast. Old quarry is now a park, quite nice. Taken my BMW bikes round over the gap but real pigs in beach gravel. I was working in Karori today, damp and cold as usual.:D

I got a front and rear Trutrac from Keith last time the exchange rate was this good - cost me around $550 each. I think they are great - especially for the work I do with a lot of mud and sand driving.

A few weeks ago I drove down Rainbow beach - didn't bother dropping the air pressure at all - and drove through the soft sections easily whilst the Patrol following me who had dropped the air down got further behind in each soft section.

If you want something for rock climbing where you may have a wheel or two off the ground, then a manual locker would be the way to go, but if you just want to go most places without worrying - got the auto locker - same as manual vs automatic transmissions almost.

My Unimog also has front and rear lockers - can switch from 2wd - 4wd to both lockers on the fly - and coupled with the 43" tyres - it will be much further in than anyone else before it gets stuck :)

Ahebron. Adrian how have you found the Trutrac, 2 years down the track I think mine is superb. In everyday driving you don't know its their, but when it gets a bit hairy I feel it locking the wheels. I have embarrassed vehicles with bigger wheels and more clearance on a number of occasions. I love the fact that its just there and you don't have to turn it on or off. Great investment if your considering a locker, especially if your on a budget.

As you say John the fit and forget nature of them is also what I like. Haven't been using the Discovery as it should of late. Mainly tarmac bashing up and down the island, but when I have been off road the TruTrac has been fantastic. I enjoy the feeling if working and driving the vehicle out if trouble.

I'm intrigued! What's the pro's and cons of the True Trac vs. Locking of the various incarnations, air, electronic etc?
And how durable are they? Stronger or as strong as a normal diff?
Ahebron, have you bought and installed yet? Just wondering if it's a home install or something best left to the shop

Hi DiscoDownUnder - if you do a search on TruTrac or TrueTrac here (ie AULRO), you will get a bunch of threads that will give you more info.

Cheers
