I thought that there should be a thread of peoples pictures that they have taken ! Does not have to be Land Rover specific either ! So click away and post away !

Here are a couple I have taken lately, just to get the thread started.

Just been to Thailand and Cambodia, so have a few ;)

There are some lovely photos in here!

Here is a recent for me. It's my brothers boat. Taken with my d80. 44mm FL 1/200th, f7.1 with a polarising filter. The gmail shrinking process makes it a little blurry but the full size is sharp.

Here are a few from a recent trip.

I have mucked around with Photoshop to put the black border around the photos.

These are taken with a Canon 400D, I am still using the kit lenses, but want to buy some better lenses soon.

Also lost some sharpness in compressing but I am not overly happy in the sharpness of my shots. More practice required I think:(

Hi John,

Then no I am afraid I don't have any photos of it. It got too hot for us standing out on the course so we went and stood under a shady tree near the first corner and it really wasn't worth taking photos from there. Looked like it was a lot of fun for the drivers though.

On the subject of the thread again :) Here's a couple of photos from our trip to Cania Gorge with GCLRO that we just got back from today.

if you host your pics on photobucket.com just click on the image code that automatically copies it to your clipboard you then when typing up your post just right click and paste and it will apply the image.........if you want to be sure it has owrked hit the preview button before the suubmit button. then you can see what the post looks like before you actually post it :)

So, I don't have a lot of time these days for my photography. I got a Nikkor AF-S 18-70 3.5-4.5G. Is this regarded as a good lens?

I got that focal length as I have a longer lens from the f100 so I thought it was a ok choice. The results have been good. It would be nice to have a little faster lens to limit DOF.

18-70 isn't a bad lens, the 28-70 f/2.8 and the new 24-70 f/2.8 are both a lot better and faster but at a price.

the orangutan (i think it is, im sure ron will correct us) was quite funny. we were at the zoo and this very enthusiastic father was coaching his young son on using a very nice slr, but everytime his dad shouted at him the kid got nervous and missed the shots.. poor sod.. i just stood there waited and snap.. single shot (which is unusual) just as he was looking right at me :) very happy with it.

do we all keep every photo we take? i do, so does that make me wierd? hehe.. i currently have about 18,000 photos that i have taken over the past 6 years.. my poor old kyocera must be about worn out hence im looking to upgrade sometime in the near future.

Get him a stock whip as well - they provide hours of fun. And when he's mastered one he can go onto two - one in each hand. mmmm..now my son has given up on his stickwhip and is into mountain biking. problem is I can't keep up with him...

My brother had boxers. They were great dogs... a bit aggressive to other dogs but great with people and kids. :)

That's the trouble we have - the other dogs owners think that the Boxers are trying to hurt the other dogs, but its just the way they play. Back in the UK we knew a lot of Boxer owners and It was great when they could all run and play together, Lots of noise and growling and mouthing, but no blood shed or real injuries.

Lou, photo stitching is dead easing in CS3 or CS4 just use File>Automate>Photo Merge...

The only thing in Vista is when Photoshop goes to do anything big it just slows the entire PC down.

Lou, what doesn't work in Vista - CS3 or the photostitching part, I'm running CS3 in vista but haven't tried the photostitching. (CS3 needs 1gig RAM minimum)

Usually found around the North Eastern tip of the Great Barrier Reef.

A rare and unique sea urchin with the scientific name 'Doggus Chewis'!

Now more commonly found in pet stores of major metropolitan cities on the East Coast of Australia.

Yeah, even a bit of haze found around the coast seems to hide the stars. And if I've had a few glasses of red I'm not that motivated to stand on the beach with the sand flies for an hour or so. This was the second last night while I was away.

yes I know but at the time I didn't want to take them in black and white...these pics were adjusted which we couldn't of done If i had taken them straight from the camera in the comp...and they would of looked very washed out!

besides taking in black and white you dont have a choice.......take it in colour and convert then you do have a choice:)

Not true. If you shoot in RAW format. All a B&W image is is a change to the colour space and white balance. Try it shoot an image in RAW and then open it in Photoshop and change it to colour. Of course if you shoot JEG its all locked in as B&W.

I should also add that whilst the camera's sensor records RGB photo sites this information is essentially a greyscale interpolation into the colour by the processor(s) in the camera.

Just another reason to shoot in RAW format.

dullbird
31st January 2009, 12:24 PM
either way it doesn't really matter though especially if either way you can change it to the other!
so what would be the benefit of me shooting it in black and white over colour and converting at a later date?

Ummmmm.... none:angel:

Actually there real difference is in the ability to capture in B&W over colour. The tonality of the shot is usually different in B&W to colour. Thus if you can capture a great B&W shot off the camera then you have achieved something just as you can with any other good image captured straight off the camera.

mmmmmmm. I think the only way to get different tonal values when shooting B&W straight fron the camera is to use the filters that are also excessible within the camera
these pics were taking in black and white at cooma with a red filter on to give me a more dramatic sky....these how ever may of been taking in JPEG I really cant remember now but pretty sure they were

Try playing with the depth of field and speed. You should be able to have both of the thingmibobs in focus.
Have alook at the coat of the burro. Nikon D80 18 - 200mm lens.
Taken at 35mm 80th sec F 4.2. These figures also depend on the type of lens used.

Bushie

Depth of field is also very dependent on the focus distance, as you close in the DoF narrows markedly as well.

Yesterday members of the LROCV, AWDCV and D2AU forum went to Healesville to lend a hand to a couple of families who have lost everything in the bushfires.

A house once stood right here. We sorted and stacked the rubble out of the way allowing the owners an area to begin again.

The old saying "The silence was deafening" rang true there. I sat and listened for a spell and heard only the strange crackling noise the leaves made, not the usual rustle. No birds and hardly any insects. With each step you took a puff of dust and ash bellowed into the air, like walking through the outback bulldust.

I've posted a few more pics here:

Very good Martyn, the last image would be better with using a pol filter to stop the burn on the leafs
With the tripod you are going to manage the exposure control much better.

Great pics Matt, you can really see the determination on the kids faces. I love the point o view also, it makes you feel like you are actually in the race with them.

Wow they don't make billy carts like they used to!

Great photos.

Congratulations NM, very good choice :twobeers:
I like the images
Also I like that you are not use the program Auto in the camera ;)
Are you going to shoot in NEF? I hope that it is the case.
You will have heaps of more control and be able to correct many images that will be impossible to rescue them if they are on jpg.
Now get Nikon Capture NX2, it have the advanyage over Adobe Camera Raw that reads the setting on the camera.
The colors are perfect and you will never look back
ACR discard them.
After do the necessary adjustments witn NX then save the image in tiff and if you wish work on Photoshop ;)

If you have Photoshop just try the follow:
Open your first image go to Adjustments/Curves and select linear contrast.
Use the default settings and click Ok. You will see a very good improvement.
Another tip is after working on Adobe RGB always save the images in sRGB profile for the web, The colors have more punch

It will be in the shooting menu settings.

Go to Nikon Support - D80 Manual (http://nikonasia-en.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/nikonasia_en.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=5077&p_created=1159757249&p_sid=yiB_CQrj&p_accessibility=0&p_redirect=&p_lva=&p_sp=cF9zcmNoPTEmcF9zb3J0X2J5PSZwX2dyaWRzb3J0PSZwX 3Jvd19jbnQ9MywzJnBfcHJvZHM9NDAsNDI2JnBfY2F0cz0yMTk mcF9wdj0yLjQyNiZwX2N2PTEuMjE5JnBfc2VhcmNoX3R5cGU9Y W5zd2Vycy5zZWFyY2hfbmwmcF9wYWdlPTE*&p_li=&p_topview=1) and download the PDF version so you can search for things.

Also I'd recommend getting either the Peter Inova (www.digitalsecrets.net) or Thom Hogan (www.bythom.com) eBook and work through it. The Inova is probably less technical but both are very good.

Hay - Nice shots!

Hmmmm.....I can't see where it says to use "default settings".......must be blind ;)

BTW....I have the camera set to save all images as RAW and jpg at the highest quality

Does not say default settings, what I try to say is that when you select "lienar contrast, Photoshop have a deafult setting (there is a curve already which is the default) and you just use it without change.
Sorry about my spanglish :D

yep, videos.. have read the books and watched the videos... the best places to learn things are on photographers blogs, then go and practice, nothing beats pressing the shutter button !!

Couldn't agree more. I found the eBooks extremely useful in helping me understand what I needed to, but in the end its the practice that is essential to learning the camera and the controls.

NM I hate eBooks too! The beauty of the digital photography ones though is that they provide you with real examples of shots and can give you roll over image changes to see what the differences can be before you actually use the camera so you can see how it should act. The Inova D200 guide was the first eBook I ever actually fully managed to read and I was very impressed by it.

I learned photoshop from Digital Camera Monthly Magazine. The CD each month includes step by step video instructions and the before and after images. I found it easy to follow it.

The best thing is I have a laptop to play the video on and the desktop to edit my image with at the same time, that way I can see both at the same time.

Cheers, Steve
