D1 Rear Storage

Inspired by everyone elses storage draws I thought i'd have a crack at builting my own.

My D1 is a little bit different than most, and I was becoming frustrated with the rear cargo area.

So this week I collected some bits and pieces and started my storage drawers.

Not quite finished, but hopefully should be done next weekend if I can avoid too many grand final beers on Saturday.

Materials:
4 x 600mm Runners (2 drawers) (free)
2 x 6.5m lengths of 25.4mm square aluminium tube (~$60 with joiners)
Capral Joiners to suit
3mm MDF for sides (~$15)
12mm MDF for top (~$20)
Other hardware (~$20)
Slam locks x 2 (~$30)

Frame with the draw runners inside (the draws will be about 330mm H x 500mm W x 740mm L) So they are big.
The idea was to cover the gas tank (you can still access the emergency valve) to get a flat storage space.

I have also made a cover for the tank, the two pieces of MDF for each side of the draws to form storage buckets.

So that is the outcome of today's efforts. The Qubelock system is very easy to work with.
Still need to make the draws & slam locks, carpet then fix it in the car.
Overall happy with the result, it will make the rear storage far easier to work with.

On a side note, since removing all the rear carpet and floor mates, I have coated the floor in sound deader.

I has helped, but not as much as I'd have liked.

Hopefully this will aid in the sound deadening (not that it matters too much with Simex :D)

Do you think the plastic connectors will stand up to what it looks like you will put your truck through.
Keep us posted on the progress I aminterested in the outcome as I was looking at the same gear at Bunnings. What will you make the drawers from.
And what weight will the drawer runners take.
When you cover the top in ply it should strengthen the cubeloc I reckon

The frame seems really strong - I've braced it fairly well, but I guess only time will tell.

I can always brace it with angle if needs be.
Don't buy it at bunnings - if your in vic go straight through capral.
The 6.5m lengths where $24 - at Bunnings the ~2m lengths where $19.

The runners where rated at approximately 70kgs. I'm hoping to not have that type of weight in them anyway.

Drawers are done with slam locks.
I found that the frame was moving due to the ribs in the floor.

I have strengthened the frame with angle brackets, and this seems to have stiffened it up.

I just need to cover it all in carpet and fit it to the floor.

I'm back home for a while now, but have lots of UNI work so will get it done soon.

That looks good - I was thinking of using that cubelock system but went for aluminium and pop rivts in the end.
Be interested to see how the drawers turn out.
