View Full Version : D2 SLS Operation - advice please

I have the SLS on my 1999 D2, in the last 3 months have fitted two new airbags, new compressor and new SLS filter. All good.:D

Everthing works well, takes 20 seconds to pump up to Off Road Mode, does not sag or lose air overnight.

However, over the weekend, I noticed through the rear view mirror that every time I stopped at lights or junctions, the rear would lower about 20mm then the compressor would kick in and pump it straight back up to normal road height. I cannot say for certain this is a new thing, but I've certainly never noticed it before.

On stationary idle (level driveway) the SLS remains unnafected and does not "hunt", its seems to be only after slowing to a standstill that it happens.

Is this normal fellow SLS people? should I be checking fault codes? checking the height sensors? (I sprayed them with WD40, no change)

Any advice welcome,
thanks

From memory this is pretty normal, my compressor seemed to work a lot so it is always moving and changing the heights. I am not sure why it does it when you come to a stop but mine did the same thing.

Also, you talked about "off-road" mode. You might already know this but there is no need to pump up the back all the time off-road. It is really just a special "extra extension" mode for when you need to clear a very high step or you dont want to hit your rear bumper on a drop off.
The problem is that when you have it pumped up to extended height, you are not getting as much articulation from the car and the ride is a lot harsher.

Hi Simon,
Its funny you should mention that, I was only thinking about posting something the other day!! Mine raises & lowers sometimes as well. You stop at the lights & notice the car lowers or raises. I wondered if there was a different ride height for different speeds. I know some of the more newer air susp 4wds raise & lowers depending on the speed.

Hi Simon

I have a 1999 D2 with SLS and it does exactly the same thing at lights or after coming to a stop - always has and I'm yet to replace any component.

So by the responses I read, it appears my D2 is doing what it's suppose to and now that I have the new air bags and compressors it's become noticable.

Thanks guys, I apprecaate the responses.

I think it's because as you've pulled up you've been on the brakes for just enough time for the SLS to think the rear is too high, and it dumps a little bit of pressure. I've heard of someone putting a restrictor in the outflow valve of the SLS, stops the compressor from working so hard to level out minute by minute height changes.... A quick search and you might be able to find the thread about it.
