UHF into D2

G'day all.
Just wondering if you guys have any tips for installing a UHF radio in the D2?
Have got the Uniden UH400SX-RM (http://www.uniden.com.au/AUSTRALIA/p_uh400sx_RM_index.asp) on order.

Looking for ideas on "where" in the cabin to install, and also "how" to install?
Searched through the forums and found tonnes on locations for the D1 (yeah, I know they're similar). Saw a nice pic of one mounted under the window switches in the centre console. Anyone know if theres enough room for this unit? 36mm (H) x 127mm (W) x 148mm (D).

Is it something I can do myself, or should I leave to an auto sparky?
Not mechanically minded but thought this job might be a good place to start!

This model has all the functions in the hand piece like mine! You could whack it behind the panel under the steering wheel (I used some silicone to hold it to the panel) & mount the mic to the left of the steering column.

Yeah, the remote handset is the main reason I got it! Because of that, and the fact it has no detachable front/face, thought I might mount it inside the centre armrest/storage bin, so its hidden away from prying eyes, but still able to use it fully from the handset...?

You should be Ok to do it yourself. It's not complex.
Only a couple of things :
1. I'd recommend you run the power wires directly to the battery. Don't try to tap off the existing vehicle wiring. Use wire at least 4mm. Put fuse near battery.
2. The antenna choice you make is probably the key to a successful install. Elevated feed antennas are probably the best. Keep the coaxial cable run as short as possible. Most people mount these on the bullbar - which is OK but there will be some loss of performance due to it being down lower.

If like mine the speaker is in the main unit make sure you place it somewhere that the sound is not muffled. I will need to move mine or get an external speaker as it is a bit too soft in the compartment under the steering wheel.

and I agree that you should run them straight to the battery. I figure that I don't want to lose the UHF if for some reason I don't want to turn the ignition on. Or my wife can still use it to call me on the handheld if I have wandered off with the car keys.
