Oil temperature Question

I have a VDO oil temp gauge (50-150 degrees)
Im not sure if I will use it, but if I were which sump would be most useful to be monitored. 300tdi fender 130.

With no oil cooler on the R380 my thoughts are with main gearbox... but I am open to be guided by opinion and hearsay.

Id go the Tcase.

that said. so long as the oil level is correct there is nothing you can do with a td5 or tdi that is going to cook up the oils in the vehicle without frying something like the coolant first.

see if you can sell it to someone with an auto.

you might even think about putting it in the powersteering as thats really the only proper hydraulic system youve got in that vehicle.

Yeah, my feeling was its just another gauge that will tell me something I cant do too much about... I may just stick it in the parts box unless someone really wants it??? they are pretty cheap new these days $50ish so I couldnt in all fairness sell an old one for much?

Hmm, I dunno.

I'm currently logging oil temps in a Tdi (fuelled up) as it appears I might be overheating the oil in extreme situations like mountain passes, even though the coolant temps are OK.
I won't know for sure for a few more weeks or a month, but I'm thinking the standard oil heat exchanger isn't big enough/efficient enough, or my oil t/stat isn't opening......

BTW, I've just strapped a thermocouple to the OD of the oil filter. The highest temp I've seen so far is 106* just running down the highway on a cool spring day..........

whats your EGT's and cooling system doing at the time...

It also comes down to how good your oil is...

cheap oil just aint going to cut it like the good stuff.
