Disco selection help

To recap my history. Last week my 1994 300 tdi 5 spd was totaled. Looks like the insurance company is coming to the party :D. So i will be looking at another beast. I know i will be opening a can of worms but here goes.

1. considering a v8 auto with gas. Was offered the opinion that a 4.0lt was more economical to run then a 3.5-9, opinions ???

2. Would love a 300 tdi Auto, feed back in how they drive would be appreciated. Can't complain about the 5 speed but getting lazy do the autos perform ok.

3 Hopefully getting between 7-8 for the beast whats a reasonable price for a 300 tdi auto and or v8 auto same vintage between 1990-2000.

I appreciate these are broad questions, but if you dont ask you dont find out.

I had a Tdi manual and now a Tdi auto and I like the auto more [on balance]. Beware of comments that are far too dogmatic like "auto is the only way to go" or "manuals went out with cross ply tyres". The auto certainly isn't flawless, both have mutually exclusive pros and cons.

I'd say the important thing is to have a few decent drives in one and decide if it suits your types of driving more than the manual.

All that said the automatic does drive very nicely and the performance is quite good.

An early V8 Disco on gas can be picked up very cheap probably less than 4 k.
This leaves a good margin for acceseries.:D:D:D

The auto is cruisy but lacks in engine braking.
Manual great for economy, push starting, engine braking.

I had both and I prefer Auto cause I like Sand-driving and getting lazy plus am on phone a lot.

I bought a great 94 auto 3.9 with 110k on clock with books, leather, sunroofs etc ES model for $5k.

Think autos might be easier to sell also.
