View Full Version : I've bought a Jeep. Sorry.

Hi,

Well we moved from Adelaide to Salt Lake City, Utah, 3 weeks ago. We bought the missus a Nissan X-terra shortly after arriving, as she insisted on something reliable :wasntme:

That took us over budget, so left me with a certain amount to spend. Deefers are too expensive, so I had my heart set on an 03/04 Disco. I've looked at about 12 so far, they were all either dogs or heading that way. 3 refused to start at dealerships, and all had niggles which I would not have been happy with. Very disappointing, plus insurance and parts are apparently pretty pricey. LR3's were too expensive.

So I looked at Jeeps. Wranglers did appeal in a way, but only four seats is really no go and used prices are pretty solid. So I happened upon a Jeep Commander at a dealership. Clearly designed by a stylist who decided only to use straight lines that day, it is not going to win any beauty contests :p

It's a 2006 model, 30k miles, leather, 7 seats (rear ones Ok if you are Douglas Bader or a kid) and what swayed it for rest of the family, DVD player with wireless headphones. So 2 years newer then the Disco's and still in warranty. It had depreciated 21K in 2 years - ouch!

It's a shame I'm not staying with LR as my daily driver, but my consolation prize is that my Stage 1 is on the way and should be here in about 6 weeks :D

Anyway, all the best from the good old US of A. You guys really are in the Lucky Country, we miss it. :(

Too bad about the Defender. Strange how the car mad USA treats it. Still buying a jeep isn't too bad, you could have bought one of those fugly great pickups they drive around in.

I suppose you should explain an X-Terra is kind of an X-Trail on steroids.

Wow...out to Mormon country

Bloody right. You would not want them over for a beer :wasntme::p

Agreed about the Deefers, cheapest one I have seen so far was $25k US for a 1997 90 with 110K miles on it. :o

Those pickups are bloody awful, agreed. Not my thing at all.

The X-terra is pretty good, to be fair. 4.0 V6, solid, reliable, low range for offroad. As the place we are looking to live has up to 5 feet of snow in winter, I wanted the missus in something reliable and safe.

Pics to follow

Cheers

It is a nissan pathfinder. I wouldn't invite one round for dinner just in case they wanted one of your daughters to add to there collection of wives.

Er, no, it's not. Pathfinder is longer with bigger overhang. Compare the two.

You have a point about the wives though :p

I would think that is what Australia would see as the direct Pathfinder replacement. The old Aussie sold Pathfinder was about the same size as your wife's car. The new Pathfinder we get in Australia is much bigger as you said.

If I was sent to the US I'd go a 74 Bronco with column shift auto and a Windsor 351. Also pick up a 66 Ford Galaxie. Maybe a 62 Continental...

X2 or an Inter Scout or a CJ Jeep........Jeep Comanche (sp?) if I wanted a ute.

Ive owned 2 Jeeps, 1 great and 1 terrible, but it is true, even over here they depreciate much quicker than most cars and I for 1 dont understand why, they just dont seem to sell secondhand.

They are a good truck as far as I know but if your after an Aussie point of veiw from other owners check out AUSJEEPOFFROAD - Powered by vBulletin (http://www.ausjeepoffroad.com/forum/), there are some good folks on there as well.

Sometimes the Yanks get it right in the styling department - other times they are just wrong !!!

I recently sold this -

https://www.aulro.com/afvb/ (http://imageshack.us)

It's an imported Ranger - almost original except for conversion to RHD and it had a Chev 6.5 V8 Diesel in place of the original 351. Original C6 auto and Ford 13" diff were still in it. I reckon that this thing looked good (though some will disagree - my parents hated it with a passion).

But IMHO, that Bronco is just butt ugly. If it wasn't for the Ford label on the grille, I'd swear it was designed in Russia.

:D:D:D

I tend to agree, it looks way older than '74! Although this one looks pretty good when they finished with it!

I quite like the ones from the mid-late (?) 80's.

RosettaQ, I second having a look at Ausjeep - give you some insights into the Commander and what some of the guys have done with them - including a 4" lift, hehe. Enjoy!

There are 3 types of people in this world.

Those who own Land Rovers.

Those who own Jeeps.

And those who don't!

Brian gotta remember that Bronco was built in the 60's, the 80's model Broncos were spoofy and great off road as well, Regards Frank.

One of the Commanders lives just over the road from me. It is a nice car although it does not go off road ( a condition of purchase I think, according to home command). It does tow and does travel well. Mother says that the rear seats are lacking, but her feet would not touch the floor so........

Very nice looking vehicle.

Hey, have you had a chance to look at the H1 Hummer? I would have thought that Lion Rock etc would suit its long gate (read measurement from hub to hub). I heard they turboed the big fella? Could have a dance inside :p I know they are unpopular and in some's view crasssssss, but I beileve they are capable, not in tight scrub, but capable anyway. No need for a trailer they could carry all :) may be an economical (not for fuel but who cares if you are going to have one) but in purchase price over there.

Regards,
PeterW

Look at You Tube "Hummer Tribute", Scorpians "Still Loving You" sound track. Nice

I look at it this way, there are tinker proof cars......Bombodores, Foulcans and japorean cars like Pootrols and Kiundais, all boring but discustingly reliable and you dont have to do as much as check the oil between services.

And then there are Tinker cars, Jeeps, Landrover, just about anything with the indicator stalk on the left or is made in europe or america.

I think the tinker cars are better value as you dont just get transport but you also get a lesson in mechanics and in some cases survival in the middle of no where.

Your bosses shouldnt be afraid of Creeps, they just need to understand them and sell them accordingly to people who will appreciate them.

Push button semi auto gear box with auto 3 gears which are available in low and high range as well as reverse.

3 locking diffs which are operated by hydraulic pumps on the axel output and as the axel spins it puts pressure on the clutch pack which causes it to slowly lock but still allow differential action.

It is Helo transportable and capable of 95Mph and rated to drive on up to 30 deg loaded and can climb a 60deg slope.

Steady on Lou, it's not that much different than what Muddy mech posted as far as size go's.

The whole damn thing is made from steel like you would have in a set of sliders.

You dont have to like it but I think you would be pushing it to get your new Deefa, your Disco or your 90 through that bog on all terrain tyres as easilly as that is doing it.

Tinker proof?

When did you last have a look under the Bonnet of a Jeep? (No offence)

I had a look at mine last week when I took it in for its 12 month service.

As an ex mechanic, the last thing I would do would be tinker with it!

Managed to find the dipstick, it was painted yellow.
Rest was a complete mystery to me.

Warranty work... adjust the hand brake please. That was it.
Needed no oil in 12 months.

This thing goes like a cut snake, has more electronic aids than the space shuttle and is a pleasure to drive.(Hit a large body of water on the Bruce Hi-Way in January, no pulling to one side, the electronics took over, kept the car straight slowed it down and proceeded on it's merry way)

Try and tell me that is hard to sell.

Soon as the lease is up I will purchase it for the better half to drive.
It is a safe, reliable car.

(Might be able to afford a D3 for myself in a few years if I work hard enough)

Perhaps it's the Daimiler part of Chrystler that has changed things.

Soon as I returned home from the big smoke after the service I got a phone call from head office enquiring if the dealer service attitude and reception were satisfactory.

Tinker... I wouldn't be game.
(Or know where to start!)
