the best product I've found is "Ant Rid" in the granular form not the liquid, just sprinkle a little around the nest and in a few days, no more ants. Be careful with the stuff around kids and pets though.

The baygon ant powder is pretty good at killing anthing from wasps to ants as well.

Be very careful with Ant Rid as it a Borax mixture and thus toxic.

The best thing is to remove/destroy the nests. Just remember their bite isn't poisonous and they are edible.

your in Northern Australia, the Green ant you get is the aboreal lemon flavoured jobbie, I assume from the location of the poster they are referring to the terrestrial Green Head ant, which has a particularly painful sting and is common throughout eastern Australia.Yep, nothing better then a Green ant nest in a bucket of water for free lemon cordial when your in the tropics.;)

OK, didn't realise there was any other kind of Green Ant. Sounds like the lemon flavoured ones are a lot nicer (also good on toast as a breaky spread)

We also like the lemon drink from the tropical green ant, very refreshing.

Never tried the ants on toast though. Don't they crawl off:p:p

Have you ever tried real bush honey? We gathered a container full when we were up there last month and that IS really nice on toast.

Cheers

Now if I had known you had a container of honey in the Defender:angel: That stuff is fantastic.

As for the toast, just nip the abdomens of and use them.

I've also used ant rid when (not sure which type of ant) was creating little mounds all over my lawn. Bit of ant rid sprinkled around and voila.....all gone. As for the lemon ant drink....never heard that before......learnt something today :D. Only ants I seem to find around here are bull dogs ants and they are nasty buggars, good though for putting in an icecream container with other ants and spiders and having a gladiator type scenario ,

Bull ants... back in the days when we could buy penny-bungers, bull-ant's nest were great fun:twisted: Chuck a few bull dog ants in with the bull ants.............its even more fun. We get some big ones around here, a good couple of cm's long and ferocious as. Huge jaws and a wasp sting in the tail for good measure, and its amazing to see them actually "go" you,

Get rid of ants at Strathpine?
Honestly I think you'd do better to save the money!!
Brisbane is built on one HUGE ants nest....you'll be dusting daily and it will cost a bomb. Get rid of one lot and another lot will just move in :D
this particular ant has relatively small colony sizes and singular nests it also favours open lawn, particularly moist areas,it is probably one of the easiest species to temporarily eradicate and if vigilant can be kept down to acceptable numbers.

dieldrin ... those were the days, when we sprayed poisons that had a half life of 50 years:eek:

That stuff would kill almost anything! ... and then work its way up the food chain!

A good solution to make up that I've used successfully before is a Table spoon of Boric acid (available from chemist). Add it to a half cup of sugar in a saucepan, with enough water to dissolve it all in. It should end up a like a syrup.
Heat it all, so sugar and boric dissolves.
Next, put some of this mix in a small container, such as a milk container top, soft drink lid etc.
Place these lids in discreet locations so kids can't get to them.

You may struggle. Given that the original post was 6 years ago, there's a better than even chance that the ant colony doesn't exist any more.

And shipping a live ant colony to another country .....? ...:coplight:

Two bottles of vinegar, one poured in the nest and the second one around it. Ants dislike vinegar smell.

A natural method, voila

I imagine the ants will have grown a lot bigger in the last 6 years. Might need something a bit stronger.

OK guys, I'm a pesty! You need Termidor. Contact your local pest controller (small operator not Fwik or Rentobil ) failing that I have seen it on ebay ! It works incredibly well. job done :)

The last time we had a swarm of the little black bugger type in the kitchen I used borax. I put a about a pea sized drop of honey on the window sill where they were passing, then stirred enough borax onto it to make it sort of runny paste. They ate it up, and they've not been seen since. Don't know how much you'd need for your ants, but maybe not enough to endanger your family.

Sounds like you are making home made ant rid. The ingredients lists are pretty similiar.

X2 for Borax acid in honey.

How about getting rid of leeches? We get leeches on our lawns (probably encouraged by the sub surface septic irrigation system). A friend's kid walked off the lawn with two leeches after just a few minutes play.

Any suggestions?
