G,day.
A bloke up the road asked me what I thought of the current 4.8 ltr
Nissan Patrol engine. I had to admit that I have heard nothing good or
bad about them.
The older Patrol petrol engines used in the GQ and the like, used to be
beauties but a bit thirsty.

As a matter of curiosity, anyone had anything to do with these later
engines ? They are twin cam or something now arent they ?
Probably need to be put on gas, I expect.
Cheers.

Not had anything to do with them yet, but like most Nissan Patrols before it, probably old school technology unbreakable engine, coupled to an old school transmission etc and diffs...Soulless, boring and painfully reliable.:D

Actually, not a bad truck really:o if you can keep the fuel up to it.

There is a few around here. They will blow away a V8 cruiser:eek: Had reports of 18 to 22 ltrs/100 when driven hard. The only Partrols having trouble here are the common rail Diesels.

Few guys in town with them. They cry when you start mentioning fuel economy - even a V8 petrol cruiser is more economical:eek:

Lots of power but when you can't do 730km to 200L... and if you tow something it gets worse:eek:

Also one I know blew its alternator - apparently not uncommon on the Patrols after 4-5 years - $1800 for a new one and 3-6 months to get from Japan as not stocked in Australia. After 3 or 4 attempts he did manage to rebuild it but it took him a few months of hunting for information.

My dad has a 4.5 ltr GU, good towing vehicle but so bloody generic its boring and they handle like an overloaded boat and really dont have much more rear space than a rangie or D1 and probably less than a fender.

I looked after a 4.8 patrol for a mate who headed off overseas for a couple of months ( 05 model ), one of the top of the line models, loved it, compared to my D2 it was far better all round, really nice to drive, would have one in a heartbeat, mind you it used an amazing amount of fuel ( but by god it went hard of the line ), and he took a 35k bath on it in 18 months whne he finally found a buyer for it...

Mate has one to tow his winch truck around.
They are great to drive, power is awesome. Tiptronic auto is also fantastic.

As said they drink a serious amount of petrol when made to work.

Had to drive a new3L Common Rail from Mackay to Townsville a week ago (sorry no time for niceties and would have liked to have gone to ARB down there to see Ken with the Rangies), But, The thing on cruise control on going up a hill dropped two gears and reved up to about 4,500 revs. This was on cruise control and not me pushing it. The passenger looked at me and I showed him my feet back like you would going downhill in a defender. Also the Cruise would waver about 4km hr from its set, ie; Julie's Freelander sits on the speed you set and wavers bu**er all. The Nissan seemed to be searching all the time.

In it's favour it did not sound or feel like the high revs would damage it and it was not really uncomfortabel (apart from the seats as by Prossy I was uncomfortable more than a defender), perhaps I am numb and have industrial deffffffnessss.

PeterW

Guess I read it wrong (the last paragraph) and replied to the new engine perspective:o But worth a mention though I would have thought.

My best mates dad has a 4.8lt turbo and 3 months out of warranty(time not K's) with 60k's on the clock number three bearing seized, when it was pulled apart the crank was so warped the whole lot became a boat mooring:(.
Nissan washed there hands of it as it was out of warranty:mad: $13,500 for a new one.

My neighbours dad (a retired govt vehicle inspector for licensing centre) has a 3lt turbo one and swears by it.
