My 1996 110 300 TDi is normally an extremely reliable machine and starts first time.

It has developed a habit of not starting first time. On turning the key get just a click and then nothing. Next few times the same thing. Wait 5 minutes and it is fine.

Originally it would only happen once every few weeks. Now it is becoming more common. Starts first turn when cold in morning. Problem seems more prevelant when it is hot.

So starter solenoid or a relay problem?

Currently I am in Broome area for next few days.

Could anyone give me idea of part numbers required or where I could get them in Western Australia.

Regards

Brendan

G'day All From you describe, it reminds me an awful lot of the ign switch, my 110 county diesel has had 3 ign switches over the past 17 years and thats exactly what it did, so thats where I would be looking first cheers n hope you get it sorted Dennis:angel:

if you can hear the solenoid click it's probably not a ignition switch problem, I would start with removing the starter motor and solenoid and cleaning all the contacts if you can get the solenoid apart you will have some large contacts in there they can become dirty and this creates a high resistance for the current to flow, as dose heat as electrical things get hot resistance increases and thats why the starter motor works better when its cold. good luck let us know how it went.

For anyone who is replacing the ignition switch on a 300TDI defender. You can drill out the security bolts on the steering lock with a cobalt drill and replace with M8 bolts.
