Hand Brake Drag

My 08 Defender was suffering from a rattling noise on decel which was apparently the handbrake dragging.

The dealers solution was to cover the brake pads in grease?!?!?

Before I go making a fuss - this isn't normal is it?? (the grease that is)

Thats right up there with changing the spark plugs on a td5!!! Perhaps instead of greasing them they could just take the rear seal out of the transfer case, then they would be self lubricating!

All joking aside, surely this is a fire risk? What happens if you inadvertantly drive off with the handbrake partly on?? Oil + Heat + O2 = Fire in my book.

That is one of the dumbest things they could do!
I would be rather vocal about it and ask them to pay for the damage caused when my Defender failed to stay put on the drive and took out the brick letterbox!
If you don't habe brick letterbox take a picture of someone elses and tell them thats what it looked like before.

he might of ment grease up on the retainer plate part of the shoes not the actual wearing face...

But since Ive been on the wrong end of a sparkplug change on a td5 from a dealers I wouldnt be surprised at anything that they try on anymore.

No, if this is true, then I would immediately lodge a complaint with LR australia and get these clowns away from working on motor vehicles before they kill someone.

Hey - what is the problem:angel: - we all know land rover handbrakes still work well when covered in transfer case oil - so why not with a bit of grease on them:D

my sis suggested this once...but, bless her, she was 17 with NO mechanical knowledge what so ever.

Almost as good as the car that someone had lowered by placing 2 exhaust claps on each spring... figure that one out.... :) When told of the error of their ways by both dad and me, they drove off on their merry way.

I reckon it would be worth kicking up a huge stink about it! Imagine if the main brakes failed and you had to stop using the hand brake. Would have to be the biggest act of stupidity ever!

Check to make sure that they greased the friction faces of the shoes or the drum (rather than just the springs or pivots).

If they have, I would be demanding brand new shoes, and the drum thoroughly cleaned in "brakekleen" (along with any other affected parts). And would also be writing the letter to LRA.

I took the drum off when I had the rear driveshaft off - yeh definitely grease all over the brake shoes.

Its amazing that it works at all! Shoes are totally stuffed in my view!
