Hi all, made my mind up to buy a discovery/range rover when my motorhome sells. I would like peoples views on which model/s would be the best to consider for the long term? e.g. manual/auto, diesel, petrol, petrol/gas and what are the problem areas to whatch out for. Many thanks in advance. Bob H Qld

You might need to give us a price range----

Depends on your budget. Give us some idea of the price range you are looking at.
With the models you mention it could be anything from $2000 to $100,000.

He said Long Term... so that crosses off any Rangie from a P38a onwards as they are going to be an electrical nightmare when they get on in years.

Disco I with a 300TDi?

Classic Rangie with a 3.9?

Both pretty cheap :D

Im pretty partial to the 300Tdi Disco's, mines a 97 and has done 308,000kms so far and still going well.

I PERSONALLY wouldnt buy a V8 but I will get flamed for saying that and I wouldnt PERSONALLY Wouldnt buy anything past 97 other than a Deefa due to the massive amounts of useless electronics and rubbish on them that will give you greaif in the years to come.

You could look at doing an Isuzu 4DB1t conversion to a Rangie, that gives you the rangie styling with the economy and power of a diesel.

There are a few people on here with Isuzu Rangies Justin Cooper, Dougal and Rovercare I think all have them and are all raving about them in one post or another and I think it sounds to be the best balance going around.

Isuzu 4DB1t conversion to a clasic Rangie would be a top bit of gear. I have had a few Rangies have had a great run with them. Simple,Comfortable, capable off road and can be driven quick if need you to. As I now have a 120" 110 with 4BD1T that is good on fuel and has heaps of torque.
I think this set up in a Rangie clasic would be great.
There is a few around now and all go quite well.

93/94 Disco V8 Auto on LPG injection, simple, cheap, if you dont like can always upgrade to a bigger V8, 4.0L or 4.6L or even Diesel, Disco has more room inside than a Rangie, Regards Frank.

For the $15K price bracket, I think there'd be 3 choices (I'd go for the 4th):

(1) Series II Discovery (D2) try to get a private sale TD5
(2) Classic Range Rover (pre 1994) and then have several thousand dollars to get it up to spec.

The P38 (1995 till current shape) Range Rovers are too problematic.

(3) Series I Discovery (D1) is just a plastic Classic Range Rover, so unless you want the diesel (300Tdi 4cyl) then you may as well look at the Rangie. However a kitted out Tdi D1 could be yours with enough change to put LPG fumigation on and get that extra power / range.

(BONUS 4th choice) Might also be worth considering a Defender if manuals are okay with you. The Defender will have fewer things to breakdown, and will hold it's value much better that a Rangie or Disco. The Defender will also offer a whole lot more freedom to customise the vehicle, and will offer you entry into a very exclusive club ;).

If you want to go for the cheapest option and ad plenty of mods, i would either go a classic rangie or a 200tdi d1 (depends on wether you would rather a v8 or a deisel) We have 2x 200tdi discos (both 1992 models) apart from a few gearbox isues they have both been great so far, very economical and some say more reliable then the 300tdi;)
If you don't mind an automatic they could be well worth considering because they are alot stronger then the manual gearbox's and you want have a clutch to worry about the clutch.

But if you would rather go a later modal i would say a 300tdi disco around the 1998 mark with low kms on the clock and you will still have cash left over for other mods.

Or theres always the good old defender:D
