View Full Version : Rebuilding a 109 1958 Ute

Hi All
Early in 2007 I acquired a collection of several tonnes of Land Rover bits.
Consisting of a 109, 88, chassis and enough panels etc, to build a car or two.
I picked up 1/2 a shed full, then took took 5 weeks off to go to Philippines.
When I returned Wayne Ellard and my self spent 2 days filling up 2 Car Trailers
and our cars with the rest.
This my first attempt to post photo's so I hope it works.
The photo's are of some of the gear Wayne and I picked up in March 07.

I started to sort out a little of it before things ground to a halt because I went over seas for 3 months, in May 07
Things have not moved far since then as I have been to Cooma, Vietnam, Bali, and 2 weeks fishing on the west coast of S.A. so far this year.
In saying that I have rebuilt the Engine and Gear Box from a donor car and a Firewall.
Some of the bits I have found are, 2 complete PTO units, Governor, PTO head and pulley, 80 " firewall etc. All have been recond to new condition.
I still have more than 15 20 ltr drums still full of gear to go through.
Pictures to follow.
Cheers

Hi All
Sleepy they are in 100% nick
been sand blasted some 15 years ago
no holes no nicks
I believe they are 88'
not sure if there is a great deal of difference in 86 and 88" Bulk heads
the 80 " is a perfect late 48 early 49
The chap I got the gear off, over many years wrecked more than 15 series 1's
and kept the good bits
i have 20 ltr drums of nuts, screws, bolts, spring washers, U bolts etc etc, all cav plated.
100kgs of new Galv bits, half the gear I know not what.
I go through another drum, I am like kid with a room full of Christmas presents.

Hi there
I can assure you the gear is in great condition.
The gear was scattered - and majority of it was stored in a field bin, were it took 2 days of busting a-s to get it all out.
Since picking all this gear up - Ian has rebuilt the 109 engine & gear box and is back in the rolling chassis with bulk head fitted, going to be a nice rig when its finished.
With the little fella mastering posting pictures I assure there will me namy more pictures to follow of the rebuild.
Well all the best

How did you get the alloy parts so clean, like the gearbox and distributor??? Was it just a solvent or one of those alkaline degreasers which make the metal fizz? or did you use some sort abrasive blasting?
I love to get parts that clean but in the past used petrol or kero and I get sick of the fumes.

Hi Hartley
it takes as long to clean as to rebuild
Degrease, pressure wash, acid wash, rotary steel brush, steel pot scrubbers, elbow grease, sand blasting etc, etc. And a few more I have not mentioned.
Sometimes it is easy, most times it's a lot of hard work.

G'day All, Yes I would have to agree thats shaping up to be in my humble opinion a 1st class job from where I'm seated, and yes to get bitz to look like that takes a lot of effort, strip the vehicle right down to it's basic parts is the only way, absolutley impossible to do it any other way and bead blasting does a fab job on alloy casings etc, anyway wafflin on here keep at it mate,, 1st class, cheers Dennis:angel:

Hi All
The Paint is Enamel with a Urethane Enamel Additive
The Paint is Protec Acrylic Enamel
colour is Leyland Slate (Storm) Grey
They told me 4 ltrs would do the car
5 ltrs later and have not done the Doors or tub etc.
Have used more wet and dry than ever
Acrylic is the easy way, this is a learning curve.
it has kept me out of the pub for weeks.
It can bring every bug and dust bit for 100 kms.

Does that mean you will have to coat it with UV resistant polish then? Will UV cause the acrylic enamel to break down?
Looks flipping fantastic :BigThumb:

All I been told is the following
Do not polish before 30 Days
do not cut
and use a good quality polish
Why the query re U.V.
is it a problem?

Hey there Ian,
I don't know a lot about these new fangled paints.
From what I see around the place, there are quite a few (particularly jap imports) cars that have that blistered paint effect on bonnets and roofs. From what I have heard this is because they were not polished with UV resistant polishes and the result is that the paint has broken down.
Most are reasonably old, but an increasing number are newer.
I assume that newer vehicles use these acrylic enamels.
I wonder if the comment "use a good quality polish" relates to that?

Hi all
been spending a lot of time standing still
been working most days
on the tub
it was in good nick from 100 yards
up close not wonderful
I set out to do the best I could with my limited skill
the sides were bent in some 200 mm
the bottoms were bent nearly flat
quiet a few bits were broken
the supports under the side panels were bent nearly to right angles
the floor had a bow from one side to the other of some 75 mm.
The rear support had been ripped off years ago.
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2008/12/21.jpg
The seat boxes were broken, so were the internal braces.
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2008/12/22.jpg
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2008/12/23.jpg
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2008/12/24.jpg
The bracing under the side panels were bent to the point they needed to be replaced.
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2008/12/25.jpg
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2008/12/26.jpg
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2008/12/27.jpg
The floor was rerolled straight as possible , there were scars from one end to the other and more dents than I though could be in one place.
Much bog etc etc and several days later things were as straight as i could get it.
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2008/12/28.jpg
Then there was the the Ally section at the rear of the tub.
when I remove the floor I found it was bent up and down, looked like a cooked Spiral Spaghetti.
I used a length of 20 by 12 mm steel behind it and glued and clamped it for several days, using all the G-clamps, locking pliers etc I own.
I now have a straight bit.
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2008/12/29.jpg
Then it only left to straighten the tub itself.
I tried heating, srinking, dolling, swearing, and have decided if I go any further
I will be committed.

Thanks Wayne
My photo bucket a/c will not behave itself.
With Wayne's help a couple of photo's to show the old fellow is still at it
I would have been lost without the Rotisserie, been able to rotate the tub nearly 360 was a big help.
The ribs under the Tub were .8 mm Al. no strength at all, replaced with 1 mm Galv, could put a Elephant (well a small one) in the back now.
The door skins were easy once I obtained the die for the opening.
Even got the second fold in the bottom.
The floor had been rolled many times fore and aft and weeks of tapping and filling dents, top and bottom.
Finding countersunk rivets for the floor was some more fun.
Spot welds marks are made by heating a 1/4 inch rod to red heat and burning the primer to make a neat hole before putting the top coat on.
will add more soon as I still have a stack of photo's to come.

Hi All
Once again thanks to Wayne for his help in posting photo's
In 2007 when I was in U.K. I bought from Exmoor Trim a 109 Tilt and seat backs, and seats, foam and covers.
I packed them into a suitcase and brought them home thanks to the luggage allowance. Two years before I bought 2 tilts a 80 and 88 home the same way.
In those days if you traveled through U.S.A. you could have up to 64 Kgs in 2 cases per person.
If I bought them today I would have has them posted home for same money.
I made the wooden seat bases myself, just about the limit of my woodworking ability.

Congratulations on a superbly completed job. There's nothing like the maiden voyage, listening to the odd sounds, smelling the strange smells, and generally getting the feel of it.

G'day All, No I'm not sobbing nor crying, he deserves all the credit he gets,:ehigh5::twobeers: and I went to the same school (hard knocks), you have never made anything until you have stuffed it up big time and have to do it all over again.
The forming die for the door, great idea, but I had to make 7, I think from memory to make the boiler (firebox/throatplates/smokebox end plate etc etc) in my 5" gauge live steam locomotive, and I have made forming dies for other applications (read Land Rover mainly)..
I'm currently working on another S2A 88" GS, only had it less than 3/12 and it has had some major work done on it already, a complete nut n bolt job anyway I don't want to hijack this thread, great work mate, wish I was out at Blinman to see it in person, did see one the same model etc and colour back in 02 in downtown Blinman:cool: anyway cheers Dennis:angel:
ps will look forward to seeing pix from W.E. next week:D

averaged a little over 7.3 kms per litre.
