THanks in advance to the brainstrust again.
Is this standard equipment the little guage in the centre is a tacho STAR brand? Just asking if it is worth getting fixed when I get the speedo done or just get an aftermarket one to fill the hole.

No. No Series Landrover, as far as I know, had a tacho as either standard or optional equipment. After market ones, however are not uncommon, although I have never seen one in that location.

strange locations seem to be the theme for this one I picked up, a commodore fuel tank mounted in the tray. One of the most bizarre electrical patch up jobs i have ever seen. The exhaust under the floor and running through the rear pto section. This keeps the passenger warm, could prob cook an egg in the footwell. I"m slowly getting it sorted Commodore fuel tank out today and a series one installed. Just about got the wiring sorted. then re-route the exhaust to a sensible location.

The head light switch should be where the tachometer is.

There were some Series 2 and Series 2a that had optional "oil pressure" or the combined "oil pressure/water temperature" gauge in that location but I don't believe that I have ever seen a key start with that configuration.

Never a tachometer.

IMHO I like some fixes that come out of inventiveness, it is where progress stems from.
Irrespective of the "hot foot" issues, the exhaust running through a redundant PTO hole, will never be crushed between the chassis and a rock, or damaged by even the most extreme situations off road.
I wonder if the Commodore tank was an additional tank before the main tank died and the add on became the main?
Some workmanship can however be appalling and you are right to correct it.

G'day Olive Drab :)
Is this an ex-army Landy?? if so the centre hole where the Tacho is would have had a combined oil Pressure/Temp guage smiths brand, capillory type temp, and line type oil pressure, it would also had a combination Ign/park /headlight switch, with a push button solenoid switch under the dash, if it was ex-army, it would have had the exhaust pipe routed throught the PTO holes, curving up from the front, over the gearbox X-member,under the passengers floor, and through the PTO holes,(yes, it does give the Passenger a hot foot, mine has a piece of heavy rubber conveyor belt under outdoor carpet fitted) across the rear to exit at the rear of the right hand wheel well, there are bracket mounts on the chassis (if it is a LWB) muffler can be between the chassis x members after the transfer box, or across the rear between the chassis rails:) the military 2a has 2 x 50 litre tanks, with screw-in dipsticks, and a fuel change-over tap mounted on the front face of the seatbox onthe right side close to the transmission tunnel. all the original Lucas switches are still available, s/hand from swap meets or new from KB Classic Spares :)
Hope that is of some help
cheers

Does VDO or a similar brand make a tacho that small?
I've been seriously considering installing one next to the voltmeter in my ex-Rural Fire Service LWB ute.
I'll have to find a pic but they put some sheet metal on either side of the steering column and fitted some switches and the guage on the LHS of the steering column and a fuse box on the other, presumably for the spotlights and beacon, etc.
A little tacho the same size next the voltmeter would be perfect.

....
Yes you see them advertised for later model defenders
or ones like this New 2" Performance Tachometer Gauge New (http://cgi.ebay.com.au/New-2-Performance-Tachometer-Gauge-New-Black-Glass_W0QQitemZ190259156955QQihZ009QQcategoryZ3367 9QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem)

I put one in the Rangie not long ago. VDO was the only one I could find at the time.
Price was over $200 from memory.:(

I just priced a 2 1/6" 6,000rpm Tacho........$215!!
I can't work out why an oil temp gauge the same size is about $70 or $80 yet this is so expensive.

G'day Kombi1976 :)
Because------- it's a 2 inch Tacho :) that goes into revheads street machines :D and because they can charge that price and still sell plenty:mad:

No.....if it was going into a street machine it's be 3 1/2" or bigger.
The SplitFire tacho in my '67 Kombi is 5" with a shiftlight and that was almost $300.
If I'd bought a AutoMeter or VDO I would've been looking at $600+.
VDO are the only ones who make a 2 1/16" tacho and that's in their ####### style series.
Basically, you're buying aircraft gauges and that might be why they cost so much.

And yet I bought a 3.5" unit with shift light, brand new, off the shelf for about $60 a few years back.
And that's still smaller than the ones found in most "doof doof" wagons around, though.:D
The reason I was given for the high price of my 2" (after I had installed it, and got the bill 4 weeks later ) is that VDO was a premium unit with better tolerances to vibration, dirt and moisture.
Mind you, my BS meter was reading rather high at the time.:D
But I guess that's the price you pay, when you want 2 gauges to match....

Ok, I have to post a pic for dinty. this is the caption for the photo
this pic does show that someone somewhere did go to the trouble of fitting one into a Series Land Rover, it was most likely done by one of the firms in the UK that specialised in kitting vehicles out for long range expeditions back in the 60's

Did you notice that it had the charge light replaced by a charge guage? I presume this is an amp gauge.

thanks for the info everyone. firstly 2" tacho's are available, i think Otto lenz has VDO for $77, ( I think from memory john said it was a VDO brand). i checked this out when dropping my speedo in for repair.
my landy is not an ex-mil (I wish) the previous owner was a fisherman and everthing under the sills was rusty, including the fuel tank, the commodore one was an addition because of the rust and not fitted very well either. Every pothole or bump i was reminded it was there. have since repaired the 10 gal tank and things are a little more quiet in the back. I'm after a left side tank if anyone has one. i cant afford to make any until xmas, for myself anyway. Slowly but surely it is coming along. the first things i did were the important ones brakes and steering. Now plug away at the rest. It will keep me busy for a while. i wish everyone that ever attempted an auto electrical repair knew what a soldering iron and heatshrink was. Twisting and taping and drilling and riveting and sikaflexing and hiding rust. Undoing 20 or 30 years of bush mechanics.
I love my landy though, my wife thinks too much.
My sister hates me now, the brother-in-law just bought a series haha
And too all here keep it going this would have to be the best forum on the net.

i remember when i bought my first landy in SA a few years ago now. had to push it to the servo and fill the main tank up , only to find out it had a bloody BIG hole in it so i ran it on the aux. tank for a few months till shody welding split and that too was RS. solution , 20Lt jery can on roof with siphon hose direct to carby. that worked well till forced to sell 6 or so months latter. cant remember though if it was a series 2A or 3 swb :p
