View Full Version : A run of bad luck

G'day all and greetings from Birdsville

Can anyone beat this.
You will recall we were all set fo our run along the dog fence and Hay River etc. Well ...........................

5 vehicles planned to leave ........

1st was a week late due to a special fold out tent setup he had made for his landy tub trailer being 50mm too wide.

Next down is a TDi Disco with a cracked head so this bloke is stranded in Tenterfield for a week.

Next comes Doug whose spare wheel carrier on the back of his old Rangie snaps off when he steps down onto it from his roof rack. We are in the middle of Bulloo Downs and 145 Km from Thargomindah. He badly breaks his arm in 4 places so I make 2 round trips to Thargo, 1st with him and 2nd with his vehicle.

We finally all join back up at Innamincka (except Doug with the broken arm). We get to Wakers Crossing where the Tenterfield Disco driver's 33 yo drugg addled, alcoholic spoilt brat son tosses a major hissy fit and his poor bloody old man (who should know better, but doesn't) takes him home.

Down to 3 vehicles ....

Now mine starts to play up horribly over reving and knocking something terrible. Limp into Birdsville, having left our CT at Poepples (sp) Cnr.
Check the oil to finf about 7 litres of diesel in the sump .... :eek2:

Check he injector O rings and they all look fine so maybe a cracked head. Don't want to think about the state of the bottom end at this stage.:dbcry:

We're stuck in Birdsville until we fly out on Thursday and the landy goes out on a truck next Sunday.

So .... can anyone beat that for a run of bad luck.

Cheers

Rosco

Sorry to hear all this.

From the tone of your post, it sounds like you're taking it fairly well.

Crikey. That will take some beating. And I hope I'm not the guy to do it.

All the best with the repairs.

Why do we all try to out do each other on bad holidays:confused:

Hope its not as serious as it sounds and that all the others make it back or mend OK.

Just remember, story's of things going wrong are far more fun to tell/hear than storys of things going right:D

And WHAT a story you've got:eek:

I just heard from broken wing Doug ..... The bloke with the 130 with the landy tub trailer and tent which wouldn't fit continued on the trek and rang Doug last night. He was on the Barkly Hwy heading east and his front prop shaft let go behind the diff . Apparently the shaft is like a piece of spaghetti with yet to be determined damage to the transfer case and auto transmission ( yep .. auto .. after market job) He limped into Camooweal and is now trying to make it to the Isa to see what can be done.

+

The only non landy was an old Tojo cab chassis which had been extended and converted to a 6x6 with a 6.2 Chevvy and auto. With a gypsy caravan type outfit mounted on the back. Apparently he was looking at it and decided it was on a rather strange lean so decided to investigate. Broken main leaf and helper on one side front spring. Then found the other side was also broken :(.

So 5 vehicles set out and 5 were broken. It wasn't all the rough either ... much harder going up the OTL on the Cape.

Don't know where mine is at the moment .. somewhere between here and there :o.

I'll report back after I get the bad news from MR ... :wallbash::wallbash::Thump:

Sorry to hear of all this, Rosco - it is an extraordinary turn of events. At least you are getting the best fellas to do the fix (MR). They will do the right thing by you.

And all the best for the final outcome.

just wait till you get the bill for freighting the landy back home!

Thankfully that's one issue I don't have to worry about. We had the extra Ultra Cover with RACQ so they pick up the tab for our accommodation, air fares and freighting the fender back ... :ohyes:

The saga continues.

Got a call from MR last Wed PM. The head is cracked at the No. 1 injector.
Doesn't look like I'll get much change out of 6 big ones ... :eek2::toilet::wallbash::dbcry::Thump:

They very kindly informed me whilst I was sitting in hospital, about to undergo a very unpleasant procedure (brachytherapy) for prostate C. I guess it could have been worse ... lucky I wasn't in the ICU of the cardiac ward :(.

Escaped from hosp on Sat PM. Have a week off then 5 weeks Mon-Fri of external beam radiation therapy. To add to my woes, the treatment regimen isn't covered by Medicare or Priv Health so there goes another 6 big ones ... :no2:

The upside is AULRO will soon have it's very own mobile Min Min light for hire. So blokes & blokettes .... what would be a reasonable hourly rate ?? :D

I think the rate should depend on the tricks performed--

or should we go with wattage??

maybe a poll??
:p

are you related to George130 by any chance???

See, that's why you should switch off your phone in the hospital, then you wouldn't have got the bad news!:D
