One tower in Dubai is pushing 688m, there's another planned (it'll take 10 years to build I think) that claims it'll be over 1 km high.
No, I wouldn't want to be a crane operator AT ALL.
When my Uncle was an apprentice builder he was left hanging on a crane hook for half an hour while the operator when for a tea break....imagine that 1km up.

It'd freak me out, but I'd bet the operators are used to it and probably enjoy the views.

Hey Guys,
emailed a friend in dubai..... confirmed !!! :D
"Hi Mate,
Yep that would be the Burj Dubai - currently the worlds tallest building. And yes Nakheel a local developer is planning a mixed use building (Commercial & Residential) that will be 1km high. Got a spare 200million you can by the penthouse on the top floor!
Am in Dubai since Sept 1999, wife, two kids (Jack 3yrs & Ava 3 weeks), and dog and a goldfish.
Got too love the arabs, if it were not for Oil they would still be shagging camels!!
Cheers
Nat"
cheers :D

Funnily enough this was in todays "Age" about the 2 towers.
Talk about timing!!
Dubai aims to top its own world's tallest tower - News - Travel - theage.com.au (http://www.theage.com.au/news/news/worlds-tallest-tower-the-sequel/2008/10/06/1223145208582.html)

Dubai is just incredible. There is some seriously fantastic engineering over there. I'd love to go in a few years.
I'm lucky enough to have been up a couple of tower cranes (only 86m - tiny in comparison) but that was starting to get pretty hairy.
Some of the crane opps around the world are the highest paid construction workers - not a bad job if you dont mind heights!
Couple of pics:

I found that going up in our new piling rig at work was worse - but only 40m.
The mast moves around too much!

G’day guys. I’ve been working in and transiting through Dubai for the pass six years and the place has really gone nuts in the small time I’ve seen it. The engineering projects on the go now and the ones that are on the drawing board really boggle the mind. I may get half a day in town next week on my way home to Oz? But I wont be sight seeing, It’ll be straight down Sheikh Zayed road to the Land Rover dealership to pick up some goodie from the accessories shop to bring back home. Yeah a visit to Dubai is a real eye opener and great place to go shopping, but bring heaps of cash cause it aint cheap!;)

The worlds tallest tower has had quite a bit of discussion. EG does the building need to be able to have people working or living in it. Can it be an antenna, or radio tower. All the classic tallest buildings in history, chrysler building, woolworths building, empire state etc were all shorter than an antenna in canada and Warsaw which was the tallest of any structure in the world untill it fell down making the Canadian antenna the worlds tallest. Moscow's tv tower at 512m (moves side to side 12m in wind and allegedly has a foundation only 2m deep!) was also the northern hemispheres tallest at one stage.
Anyway...... during construction the Dubai building has now broken all other records regardless of what the structure is, so discussion is over. The concrete at the bottom of the building was not strong enough (it would have crushed under the building weight) so it is all steel. I think its height is 819m from memory. When this was announced Russia said they were going to build over 1km, I didnt know about Dubai's second building over 1km, wonder why? Other cities have since quoted other tall buildings and I think the heighest so far was about 1.2km.
One interesting fact north Korea once had the worlds tallest hotel, it looks like a rocket ship and they never had the money to finish it so it was wiped from all official cityscape images in the 90's even though it dwarfs the landscape. They then went back to finish it again but found because of substandard concrete its stuffed and cant really support its weight or something.
Melbourne has eureka tower but its not all that high compared with tall buildings these days.
I wonder what the max height of a solid lump of steel could be?
