I've got a 96 Disco V8, I use fully synthetic Mobile 5w - 50w oil.

I recently fitted an oil temp and an oil pressure gauge, my oil pressure sits around 2.5 bar for most of the time and drops to about 1.5 when idling, which fits in with what the workshop manual says.

The oil temp seems to hover around 80 degrees when on the freeway and when I took it offroad the other day it started climbing to around 100 degrees while I was in low range going slowly around the hills.

The water temp gauge didn't budge when the oil temp was sitting around 100, I've read in some threads that the water temp gauge is a little vague...

How hot should my oil get before I start getting worried ?

I know oil is standard tested for viscosity at 40degC and 100degC, and usual flash points are around 200degC.

So 100degC would seem quite appropriate to me.

If you ever reached the flash point around 200 odd you would be stuffed.

So maybe a max of 130degC might be reasonable.

Again I have no real knowledge of max temps, just semi-educated guessing here. :D

I'll back those guesses, they are a little conservative compared to some of the stuff that Ive got access to the manuals for that list oil temps.

Thats a good thing.
