Tassie trip info required

Hi, I am planning for a trip from Perth to Tasmania next year some time.
We are going for 4 reasons 1. hate flying 2. love driving my defender 3. 2 out of my 4 kids havnt seen grandparents yet and 4. I want to see some snow before i die.

Can anyone please tell me what is the latest in the year i can still get to see some good snow coverage and where to go. I will be visiting the in-laws around the Burnie area.
Any information appreciated, especially costs and logistics of getting across on the ferry with trusty defender 220 :)(twice as good as any other 110).

Google spirit of tasmania for boat costs. What time of the year, maybe June - July. Suprisingly snow cant really be garanteed in tassie. Its a good drive, I went the other way last year and keen to do thye trip again.

Good to hear your making the drive! Snow can be one of those hit and miss things down here, even had snow a few years ago on xmas day???? generally around August September there will be some but not guaranteed.
just be prepared my uncle came over from Geralton in july and wouldnt stop complaining about the cold:o work in the tourism industry so if you need a hand working out where to go let me know.

Where in Perth are you?

When you come over here, don't forget the south!
The snow factor around June/ July/ August can be pretty good at Mt Field and the Hartz Mountains. Mt Wellington can get pretty good coverage but access gets restricted.
Up North, you have Mt Barrow and Ben Lomond (Which has a Ski resort) and they get some great cover so I am told...

AND, the tracks down this end of the state are excellent too.Actually, there are tracks ALL OVER the state that are fantastic!

Yes I do recommend going south to see JC also you have Port Arthur, caves and Cascade Brewery.

My old man lives in Invermay now and loves it there, we also were going to move but SWMBO put her foot down and said no but I will be there next year to see the olds.

Also don't forget to do the Boogs tour as well and maybe Cradle Mountain (might have snow)

I drive over there every couple of years from Kalgoorlie. Have taken to pulling the camper trailer last couple of trips, as it gives us a bit more flexibility on the trip across and back (and saves money - even with the extra cost on the boat). Finding snow is a bit hit & miss - as others have said - you can never guarantee it. I stay over the river from JC at South Arm - have a good view of Mt Wellington and have seen snow up there reasonably regularly - but can be almost any time of the year. If you're staying around Burnie (I went to school there), there's a few spots not too far from there where you should be able to find snow at the tight time of the year - Cradle Mountain is usually not a bad place to start. You're also not far from some great 4WDing on the West Coast.

Just "go West Young Man" as far as you can across the top and turn south at the edge. from Temma to the Cape is the promised land.

Snow can be had in tasmania any time of the year. I've been on mt field in the snow on boxing day and I noticed snow on the western tiers when I went for a drive yesterday.

We even had snow on the beaches down south late last year I think it was!

However as it can be common at times, it is normally elusive. Ben lomond is probably your best bet, as mt wellington gets closed when there is snow, well every time I try to go to the snow there.

June, July and august are your best bets to see snow. Don't forget to come and visit me in launie either ;)

As for other logistics, cough up for a room on the boat, te cruise seats no mater which type are miserable (you will only do that once) and day crossings are a long and boring day.

Remember to say what height your vehicle is, but if you have a bullbar don't tell them as you will be automaatically carged for another meter in length, and normally you are under the maximum 'normal' length of 5 meters anyway (my army landie is 4.44 if I recall)

Here , here to loanrangie, i just came back from camping in the high country and YES there was still snow at Mount Buller. I would definately recommend pitch your trip for snow in Victoria to be certain you get it and if you end up with snow in Beautiful Tassie - that a bonus. I would be more than happy to show you round the Victorian high country next year. I too have 2 small children , 6 and 8 and they love the high country. It brings all sorts of challenges -they love it when the landy pulls a tree out the way OR crosses a river ....its a real buzz for everyone!
