View Full Version : 101 FC fan coupling...?

Some time ago the viscous coupling for the fan on my 101 Ambulance failed. I tried to source a replacement here in OZ but I could have bought a nice series 2A for the cost of the part.

I chose to drill and pin the coupling and make a 'hard drive' and it solved the overheating problem instantly.

Does anyone know of a suitable/affordable replacement for the 101 part as I am aware of the slight loss of power now from the modification.

Is there any reason I can't use the viscous coupling from a series 3 six or a range rover 8 ?

Cheers

I have a spare non functioning one as I recently replaced mine.
The new one came with my machine.
I will measure up the size of the old one and we will see if any thing else fits

Thanks for the replies. I am aware that the 101 part number differs from all other Landrover/Rangerover part numbers according to my parts book but was interested to hear if anyone had successfully substituted one from another rover.

I run numerous series 2A and series 3 rovers and have a spare coupling from a 2.6 lying in my parts shed which I thought of throwing into the FC...

Cheers

Phil - you are right - I just checked my parts book and it does indicate that as of 1976 it is unique to the 101 - as is the fan itself. I would have thought that they would have just used a range rover fan and VC - I guess there must have been a reason.

For my benefit - what were the symptoms of failure - the fan not driving or does it completely lock up - or what. I wouldn't have a clue what to look for - my fan turns under all conditions so I guess it is OK.

Good luck with the mod if you end up doing it.

Cheers

Mine sort of locked up by itself...........internal bearing locked.
I ownly found it by trying to spin the fan one day while playing around in the engine bay.

I just tryed turning my fan with the engine off and engine cold- it doesn't move so I assume it has locked up and doesn't work.

Garry you sound just like the right man to find a modern bolt on replacement.
My guess would to be trying a range rover visous coupling with the fan as well or to use two electric fans.

I will see if my spare one is a serviceable item first:D.

Thanks for the headsup but owing to a bad experience I no longer 'EBAY' these days.

It has given me an idea though - replace my coupling with a second hand unit and fit that spare thermo fan I have sitting around as a backup...

Cheers

Sorry the brain cob-webs are in the way of the actual part number or model, however when my 1985 RRc was almost new in 1987 or 88 (4.4 carby V8 with RRc timing cover and waterpump) we fitted a Ford thermo fan because they were tens of dollars and not hundreds like the OEM Rover part. It would be worthwhile taking your spare to an auto-parts shop and comparing to commonly available ones.
