View Full Version : D2 snorkel airflow - a better way!

As I was aimlessly trolling Ebay I came across an ad for a airflow snorkel.

Looking at the pic, I've noticed that they seem to completely do away with the narrowed original tract as the air passes through the inner guard and then down into the airbox.

After installing my own Safari snorkel a few years ago I had spent a lot of time thinking about how this whole area could have been remanufactured to help sort this problem. Seems Airflow have just completely bypassed the problem all together and plumbed straight into the airbox.

This has to be the best flowing D2 snorkel on the market if thats the case - such good thinking (unless it interferes with the tyres).

The only problem with these is the difficulties in fitting, may shops will not touch them, if you do buy one disregard the template, it's not much use

I'm not so sure that there's anythig wrong with the original tubing. When installing my snorkel, I calculated the cross-sectional area of the apparantly smaller tubing and it was greater than the airbox inlet cross-sectional area. It has rounded inner corners to allow good air-glow, although the outlets were improved on mine with the removal of some casting burrs. I made sure the connecting tube lined-up well with the snorkel and removed some inner guard metal as the opening was not correctly aligned with the mounting studs. I'm quite happy that there's no increased restriction there, but don't know how the inside of the snorkel fares further up.

The only problem with these is the difficulties in fitting, may shops will not touch them, if you do buy one disregard the template, it's not much use

when i fitted mine to the d1 i had several years ago there were two holes that were out on the template by about 5mm at most and it took all of 5 minutes to put some bluetack on the snorkel and mark out where the holes needed to be... easy peasy...

the cutout in the inner guard is actually a restriction point. I cut mine out more and have connected my Safari snorkel to my airbox inlet tubing with some clothesdryer exhaust ducting.

Apart from fitting problems with Airflow snorkels, they seem to be quite small in cross-section...
Do you have any pics of this by any chance?

The bit on pictured on the end of the airflow snorkel is installed inside the guard (between the inner guard and the outside quarter panel). It then connects through the inner guard to the existing airbox plumbing. Nothing changes in the engine bay when using an airflow snorkel.
Also there is no way provided to ensure a watertight connection between the airflow pipework and the existing D2 pipework. It's very rough and ready....:(

As far as I can find out, they don't make one for D2, certainly not for the TD5 anyway.

They certainly do, manufactured by a company in Dromana and sold through British 4WD, who advertise here.
