Spent the day looking at various 4wd's for a mate to replace his 4BD1 County. We searched high and low from modded Zooks, shorty Mavericks to Cruisers to Paj's to bloody to many cars to mention, then we saw the ad for a Daihatsu Scat, drove out in the middle of bloody nowhere to discover it, took it for a run, it goes like a rocket, so he bought it.

Anyone had any experience with them before? It's like a series but smaller and quicker, even has the vent.

My mate has a Scat,he,s had it for about 20 years,he comes out wheeling all the time.It has a welded rear and Detriot front,2.8 diesel and muddies.Another mate (who used to own the "Mogrover")and I have LJ50's with Lockrights front and rear.We all have other 4x4s but have a lot of fun in these. No way an LJ50 could replace my 130 though! The Scat has ample power with 2.8 Diesel and reasonable economy, offroad performance is decent (no match for a 110 in standard trim though) fairly robust driveline but very hard to get lockers for.
P.S if you saw the dodgy suspension geometry on the one Roothy drove last year at TuffTruck it'd be no surprise it did what it did,the passenger rear wheel just drove right under the truck The rear housing was severely bent before that as well.

Diahatsu being part of Toyota, share a few things. Some parts can be hard to get but they are a fairly straight forward machine. You could describe them as a either a "premature 40 series cruiser" or a Suzuki in Sumo training :D

True. it was one of the most unbalanced trucks I've ever seen and with so much flex in the rear it was bound to happen. IIRC myself and many others pointed this out to Rick but I think they pressed on with what time they didn't have in the build.

Damn tough cars from Daihatsu in that era. I had an F10 (possibly F20, it was a very long time ago!) that I took around australia & treated it like crap. It ended up roofless while living in Alice. Mine had a small petrol but I believe the 2.8 diesel was the same as what went in earlier hilux's.

You don't happen to know if that Scat is still for sale do you Bassifier (and where it is)? My old man and I built one up when I was a kid. I've been thinking about getting hold of one to tinker with.

I made mine into a shooting rig and towed it behind my defender. It pitched forward and back annoyingly, rode very hard, didn't do anything my series three didn't do easier so got cut up. Pat

When I saw "scat" in the title I immediately thought of the Scatman...

YouTube - Scatman John: Scatman music video (http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=mpHLEm9-0bg)

Worth a look if you haven't seen or heard it before. he managed to make a virtue out of his stuttering problem.

In the early 80's I worked in western QLD in the oil industry I drove a N 12 Volvo with 2 trailers with water tanks. The truck had hardly any working electrics, it's starter motor was a scat ute that had 2 44 gallon drums of diesel plus the service gear for the grader- just pump up the air hook on the chain tow start 80 tons no worries.
