Mine was engineer checked so the engineer does the transport dept paperwork. I called my insurance and they noted it - showed very little interest. I think it helped that a turbo version was available for the 6x6.
no dramas.

Mine was also checked by an engineer. I had the ID plates off the truck the engine came from which showed the engine complied with ADR30 (emissions I think). It seemed to me that ADR30 was all he was concerned about regarding the engine wether it was turboed or not. He noted that the engine was 'optional to this model'. I had no problem at all with VICroads changing the vehicle details from V8 to turbo diesel.

Every state is slightly different.
In WA you need to apply for prior written approval to do the mod.
http://www.dpi.wa.gov.au/mediafiles/lic_modform_prodveh.pdf
They will then send you back details of the approval and what you need to do after modification (engineer inspection, emissions test, etc...). Can take a month or two for them to process the form.
