Morning,
Now, I'm no petrol head in the racing sense, I'd rather get the Disco dirty in the bush than watch a race, but there is something about bathurst that I love.
As far back as i can remember I have watched this race, I think it was because the old man used to watch it every year as he knew Dick Johnson quite well. Anyway, I'm up early today, already getting myself se for the day. The girls have all left the house, gone to watch the sister-in-law run the Melbourne Marathon so it's just me bloking on.
I love my Disco and I hope that our family is never without a Landy of some sort, but I'm still a Ford fan at heart, it's about the only time of the year that i watch this stuff.
We've always said that one year my brothers and I will go and watch it live, has anyone ever been and is it worth it .... you know, the hasle and all .....

Yes, i have, started going in the early 70s, cars and bikes even raced there in 88 and 94 on a bike, i've never been to the V8 Supercars though, don't find it as good.
I might watch the start and maybe the first 5 laps, but that will be it, just becomes boring after that.

I generally watch the whole race, but sometimes it gets a bit boring during the midde part.I find the first hour & the last 2 hours the most interesting.
And now for the original question,i have been there but not on a race weekend, something i will have to do one day.

I have been twice...1989 with Longhurst winning in a Ford Sierra and in 2004 for Brocky's last Bathurst start with Greg Murphy/Ric Kelly the winners.
If you need to go you should go for the whole week. This way you get to walk the track early and appeciate just how steep the track is. The TV does not do it justice. For example, if you stand at the bottom of the dipper and raise your arm horizontally you can almost touch the track
Depending on how big and ugly you are determines if you decide to stay on top of the Mountain for the usual Saturday night festivities. Family based they are not. I don't understand why Bathurst brings out every moronic feral bogan and they feel free that they can run riot.
But I am a petrol head :p have watched Bathurst every year, live, packaged highlights or whatever Seven use to serve up to us.
As for the winners....couldn't care less :D EDIT: As long as its not Skaife...its been a Skaife love fest this weekend and I am over it.
I enjoy the mechanical, preparation, the logistics, the technical, the drama, the stupid decisions, the heartbreaks.
May the best team win....or maybe not

Ive watched it from go to woh for a long as I can remember.
When I was a kid we used to have a massive party at the farm each year with 40 or so freinds and family would come up and stand around the black and white in the shed or on the veranda and watch it.
These days I tend to watch it on my own........as I do with most of the V8 races as the rest of the family tend to not like it as much as I do.
Yes I have been there, I towed a big tri axle van up there for the CUB boys with 12 kegs on the tray of the F350 and was set up watching the first practice when the phone rang and I had to go to a breakdown and tow in Jinderbine on one of the other hire vans.
I tried everything I could to stay but it was go or my job so I went, fixed and towed the van back, had an arguement with the bos and left anyway.
That annoyed me more than anything.
I think you see more on telly though, it is a huge track and you see a very small part of it when your there......but it is still awsome and you set up a TV on a geny for the rest.:D
Go Lowndsy and Wincup
This year is shaping up really well, I wonder how many laps HRT will get in before they crash this year :p

I missed most of Qualifying as I was returning from Sydney and then had TV probs... but I've been watching Whincup race since he was knee high in karts, and he is a very good driver - definately up there and capable enough. I've got to say though, I barely recall seeing a car that planted to the track during qualifying and such a smooth drive from such a yound (but not inexperienced) driver. I honestly believe that his entry onto pit straight just before the stopwatch started is what cost him pole. If thats how it drives, and they are reliable then they are going to be hot ones to watch - that car wont be using tyres at all and I've got no doubt its speed is sustainable.
BTW Go the Holdens!

I only watch taxi racing once a year and today is the day. I've done it every other year of my life so I can't see me stopping doing it now. :)
However today is a day of much torment. My PVR only has two tuners and I had to choose between bathurst, Rallye, and F1. Rallye lost. :( (I know they don't quite overlap but I don't trust 10 so i allow a generous margin).

Does anyone know of any live timing or live streaming of the race?

Unfortunately I’m not able to watch this year (work has got in the road of a good time again). Been once back in 88’. Your right, drank way too much beer, didn’t see much of the race but what an atmosphere. Watch it every time I’m home for it. AFL grand final, Bathurst and the MotoGP are my TV days.

I watch it every year, but have never been to the track. I have always promised myself that I will get down there just to experience it live ... one day.
I had considered going down a few years ago to compete in the Aus Hillclimb championships that they run up the mountain in reverse from Forest Elbow. That didn't happen either ... Life just gets too busy, in the mean-time, back to the couch - almost time to warm-up the party pies and sausage rolls!

Murphy and Larry are both sooks when they sit behind a steering wheel and it is called racing not driving grandma to church.
If they cant hack a bit of bif and barge at the start they shouldnt be in it.
The 888 car didnt seem to suffer any ill effects from the incident, just Murphy's car.
Also, 888 have won for the last 2 years clean and easy and it is looking possitive so far for another seems on the restart Craig was walking away pretty easilly when the pit crew went the wrong way on the rear roll adjustment.
Yeah well the holdens have to be there for competition purposes but I just wish they would stop complaining all the time.

Same with the Grandprix in Melbourne, GE tickets are a waste if you want to see the racing but you still get the atmosphere.
At $300 a ticket for the Fangio stand or trying to get into a corpoate tent It kinda takes the enjoyment out of it for me.
I understand it takes money to put on an event but sometimes they can price themselves out of their core fan bases afordability.

In all honesty, I think the biggest whinger in Group A / V8 Supercars or anything else you care to call the category... was Dick Johnson. I wouldn't have called Murph a sook and I most definately would call LP at sook in the slightest - he is way to analytical and fiery for that (off the track), and he certainly calls a spade a spade.

Murph would have to be one of the worst but in a good way, it's all entertainment.
Larry in the same way, yes he calls a spade a spade but it seems if you race Holdens you have to be outspoken about what everyone else is doing.
I know Larry's brother fairly well, he was the Mechanic at Woodlands GC for years and Ive been through the perkins pits a few times.
Great bloke to talk to and if you want to get technical he is happy to oblige as long as your not getting in the way of business.
It's just a bit of banter with most of these guys, as most of them regardless of what brand they race are still pretty good mates as are most people who work in the same industry as one another.

I was thinking about that today, how much of it is theatrics and how much genuine. They generally seem to get on, but when Murph was crackin the sads over being touched up by Lowndes... They get over it pretty quick. :lol2:
Dick... he was a sad old man. (as in emotionally). I remember at Amaroo we had this crusty old tree on the edge of the track which was right on the tyre and earth wall (as was much of it). We always though that Dick would be the one to hit it and have the tree fall on him.
Larry I've seen in action enough at the race track... although I'd never really seen him with Jack much when he was a karter. Yeah, in typical engineer fashion, when he's happy hetalks.... and talks. When he's not... then he is very succinct and direct.:D
I agree though, there is more allegence in the fan base. A racer wants to drive.

I was ford back when it was Sierras and Dicky Johnson and then flipped when Lowndsy was on the seen with Holden but then followed him back to the better brand when he saw the light.
It is a shame that he hasnt been able to crack a championship with Ford and with the loss of sponsership doesnt look as though he will.
My FIL works for corinthian doors and they have pulled sponsorship for next year he told me the other day.
I dont know if that is public yet but they put out a memo to that effect so I suppose it is now.
If the Falcon goes by by and a FWD equivilent comes to town then Im pretty sure they will continue with the GrpA sort of structure with a highly controlled structure but with other brands.
Plenty of brands that would be elegable.......but nothing will compare to the old rivals.

taught by the greatest holden driver of all time.......Who went all hippy, came up with a weird and wonderful way of adding excessive weight to and already heavy car.
Holden then showed that they dont follow the rules with Brocky "owning" HDT but just not owning any of the creative control......and opps he tried to do something different to what Holden wanted.
Holden then fired him so he went and raced a Sierra....which was a Ford...
Holden then took him back with HSV and team brock to use him as an advertising tool.
And then pushed him into what really was a second class car for testing purposes only (was what I thought was what happened).
Brocky was the most telanted driver I have ever seen but Holden didnt do him all that many favours and he had some far out ideas that he really should have kept to himself.
As far as him teaching Lownds, yes he mentored him but he could drive well before Brocky got his hands on him but I doubt he would have got as far as he did without Brocky.

I think when Lowndes went to Ford that it made it look like he was in a really good car - which he was, but its good to see him develop the Fords into something competitive. This is by means to take anything away from Lowndes as an excellent driver.
Its a shame about Corinthian - theyre on target for some really good exposure today. Its a real shame. Mind you, I think they should also go away from Silver to something a lot more stark - but that may be irrelevant now.
I think Group A is where it was at. They just needed to work more on the parity issues. I still think that the BTCC is the best system that I've seen for mixed vehicles, though if they did reintroduce forced induction, then they're really have to muzzle that too, otherwise its just HP at the flick of a switch.

I also think that what made Brocky exceptional was his racing background and attitudes. Most definately gifted...
Courtney will be one to watch. He has always been exceptionally fast, faster than Whincup even in the feeders and competitive on the world stage. I'm pretty sure Jim his old man was a racer too and James has had the best of support all the way through. He is about as good as it gets.

He has taken Stone Bro's from front runners to mid field yet still does blistering times and their equipment is the most used in the ford camps by other teams that dont have problems with it.

I think Courney gets rushes which does him in. He grow out of that, mind you he's doing it right now as he passes Max! They were just saying he's finished 3rd, then 2nd at Bathurst and his lap times earlier were stunning in the way he was putting them together. Perhaps enduro will be his thing rather than cut and thrust.

As my wfe said "At least Lowndes name is the only name on the Peter Brock trophy still, not another d/h Ford driver".
Went in 97 for what was supposed to be Brockies last race. Had an absolute ball, no sleep, got to meet most of the drivers. As said you have to spend the week. Must be time to take my kids next year.

Come on Craig, only a holden can go from pole to 24th by the first corner:p:p:p:p:p:p
Towards the end I thought they were going to run out of them, falling off the track all over the show.Even The Enforcer couldnt keep his supercrap together:cool::cool::cool::cool:
Onya to Murphy, did well to keep it together for second despite the pit crew telling him to cool it down.
Onya Lowndes,into the 3 in a year club. 4 UP NEXT YEAR:cool::cool::cool::cool:
GO THE FORDS!!!!

Go the Holdens but congrats to Lowndes and whincup on a great drive . Also a great drive by Richards and Murph finishing second . No longer a ford v's holden race as they are both the same rig just with different shells ...... bring back the production car race i say ;):D:wasntme:.

I went to the caravan and camping show in Adelaide a couple of years ago. 1 camper manufacturer was telling me how they brought in a couple of their new designs to Bathurst, just to try out.....with the water tanks full of Jim Beam.:D
The one place nobody looked.
I heard he made a nice little profit at the same time too.

Yep all the Wannabe Ford supporters have come out of their holes, the last couple of years.
Look at the last 30 odd years and see if you can come up with the same statement, I think not.:p:p What about 200-2005 all Holdens.
Anyway as said they are not really Holden or Ford any more. Same cars just different shells.
Bring back production car racing.:D:D

I found it a great race lot's happening from start to finish.I couldn't stop laughing at the start of the race(1st to 24th:Rolling::Rolling::Rolling:).
I went almost every yr during the 90's
Saw some wild things(Was not involved in any of it:tease:).
I would like to take my old man next year as things are a lot different up on top of the mountain now.
What a fantastic race it is year in year out no matter what your team is you still get entertainment from it.
By the way if you have never been to the race GO you can't beat the atmosphere. You may see more on telly but the sound and feel at the track is far more superior.

Well done to Lowndes!
I have always been a Ford enthusiast, but I am by no means anti-holden. :)
I'm not interested in the V8 SuperCars really anymore. As has been said, same cars different shells.
I have spent a fair bit of time up on "Feral Hill" (not as a spectator) and it truely is a dive of a place. I have seen people set on fire, beaten half to death, dead (no kidding - lost my first cardiac up there...) run down after jumping in front of responding fire trucks... :o

All rivallry aside. Congratulations to Lowndsey and Winging Pup, they drove a smart race, as they have for the last 3 years.
Very reminiscent of the Brock / Perkins and Brock / Richards years, car brands aside.
Would have been good to see Seton win in a Holden.:o
Now for a quick history lesson before too many wrong oval coloured supporters sprout off. This includes Phillip Island where it began, so Ford get an additional 1 from here to.
Bathurst History Record Wins
Holden = 25
Ford Australia = 13
Ford UK = 5 (3 Cortinas, 2 Sierras)
Nissan = 2
Jaguar = 1
Mercedes = 1
Vauxhal = 1 (should be included as a Holden as Cortinas and Sierras are inc as Ford).
Plus the retard years where the moronic Euro Cars were touted as the premier class and V8 supercars started.
BMW = 1 -97 (Supercars EL Falcon included above)
Volvo = 1 - 98 (Supercars VS Commodore included above)
We can still afford to let Ford win for the next 7 years and it would only still be even total including UK Fords.:p:p;);)
Then we could also include the 24hr bathurst races that some deem legitimate Bathurst wins, but wont for now.
