Hi,

My car has recently started making a noise that it never made before.

I think I have tracked it down to the air conditioning compressor. It sounds like the bearing inside the pulley is starting to run dry.

It makes the noise when the car is first started in the morning, and appears to disappear once the pulley is warm, about 5 mins of driving.

The aircon works all fine and cuts in an out as it should.

Has anyone pulled the pulley off the air con compressor? Is there even a bearing in there?, or could it be lack of refrigerant?

The bearings on the pulley are fully replaceable - and you only need a standard puller to remove the old one, they are standard bearings a any good bearing place should have them, unless of course you have an OEX/Ingram or Repco store nearby - they will definately have them.

Unlikely to be lack of refrigerant

if it's a D1 or 300tdi defender, I believe karcraft (sydney) have replacement pulleys w/bearings

I have just found alot of info in the technical section - why didn't I search there - I always forget!

Well, 3 months after the bearing started to make noise, it stopped. Hmm, I thought: has it fixed itself!? I listened under the bonnet with the engine running and could now hear a nice grinding sound coming from the bearing!

So I have now replaced the bearing with a bearing from a local bearing supplier. The whole job took about 45mins, and I am no expert. The hardest part was finding something of 50mm diameter to bang the new bearing in with. Put it all back together and wholla - no noise! :p
