In case anyone is interested, here are pics of my Remco 80Ah AGM battery mounted sideways in my D2's SLS compressor cradle.

Thanks for the photos, I have conveyor belt rubber and the dual battery cables so seeing your install has given me the much needed *prod*:o

I couldn't initially get to the 2nd photo but the link now works, having put gaps between the links. The 2nd photo shows how its restrained.

Have you had any trouble with the battery getting soaked during water crossings? What about the battery hitting rocks and that during rough terrein?
Cheers

As above, will affect the battery or things connected to the battery when underwater:confused:

Its not been on rocky mountain trails but there is a thick base plate that extends out past the edge of the battery to protect it from flying rocks from the front wheel. No problems doing Madigan's and the likes of the Oodnadatta Track and going through Perdika with its loverly surfaces.
Its not been under water either but as the battery is on its side, no water can ly between the posts. Perhaps the +ve terminal could be sealed if I was concerned about it, but winches and their control boxes and starter motors are often submerged in river crossings so why single out the battery?

Rotating the battery 360 deg so the terminals are up higher and may be less prone to water.?

It was too much of a squeeze fitting the cables to warrant having the terminals at the top. It was hard enough fitting the battery there, with my legs under the vehicle and the battery resting on my knees to get it up base first with the possibility of the terminals touching the sill in the process if they had been at the top. Stone damage from flying rocks from the front wheel was my biggest concern although no such damage eventuated.

Where did you run the cables, Graeme? and how did you set the system up to fit in with the start battery? I assume the outlet for the fridge is in the back. Would there be an issue crossing water if the alternator was charging the 2nd battery? sorry about the questions, but I know little about vehicle electrics. Bob

nice, although would not have liked to see the result on mine which has a banana shaped cradle.
but certainly an interesting idea for those it may suit.

Hi Bob,
I had the battery +ve connected via a VSR (voltage sensitive relay) and the -ve bolted to a nearby spare stud on the gearbox (the D2 chassis doesn't normally have an earth strap) rather than run a 2nd cable back to the main battery. Nothing special for going through water because 12V isn't a problem.
As Yorkie wrote, not a good spot for the battery if going rock climbing where the chassis is going to be used as sliders.
