Hi Guys,

this is my first post as I've just purchased what I believe to be a 1999 SE. From checking the VIN in another post, SALLPAMB3X, it is a later 1999 4.0L SE with bosch electrics.

I'm new to L/R having been exposed in the past to Jeep and Landcruiser, more recently the Prado version. Thus having done some study on L/R I chose an SE due to economy and what I believe, fingers crossed, less repairs.

I have some questions however, please forgive my ignorance. My vehicle does not have SE on the tailgate, nor audio steering wheel controls or rear subwoofer. It does have leather, sunroof and driving lights. I read on rangerovers.net that the 99 without SE was the same as the 1998 Lucas setup, is this right as mine has bosch?

One other query, EZYGAS have recently installed gas, which seems to be the mixer type. I noted the airbox has been cut out at the front. Would this simply be to add horsepower? or more likely backflow from the gas system?

I've checked the airbags and all seems okay there. Fortunately the car has a solid service history.

Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.

G'Day Ren,

I have a 99 4.0 and a 98 HSE. What you will find is your car is the 99 S which had the new injection system with bosch electrics. but none of the bells and whistles like leather, subs and radio controls on the steering wheel. All in all you rangie is the same as my 4.0 but yours has the bosch where as mine has lucas.

hope that helps!

This is correct spec for a 99my & it is as said via the VIN "XA" means 99my. It is definately Bosch injection.
You wont have switches on the s/wheel nor a sub in the loadsapce area.
Did not apply to the 4.0ltr vehicles, only HSE got these goodies.

Is the sunroof & leather factory fit? Do u have electric seats?
S/roof switch on the centre console near the window switches? if it is, its a Factory roof. If on the roof Aftermarket roof.
Leather, does it have an Airbag tag on the side bolster? if it is then its factory leather.

As said by Steinzy it sounds like a 4.0 "S". :)
A lot of the 4.0 RR's did not have decals on the rear from 99my on.
Unfortunately rangerovers.net generally talks about US spec & their spec is very different to ours/UK.

Also your vehicle could be a specialorder, customer wanted a base RR & added extra's like Leather, S/roof & Fog lights.

THe hole in front of your airbox is most likely so the airbox does not explode in case of a backfire.

Congrats on your new toy.
Cheers;)

thanks guys for your help. I took delivery yesterday after a nagging engine light problem. Apparently the gas conversion has affected one of the sensors and a relay had to be adjusted. The engine light was coming up when on petrol, but not gas. I'm going to have more of a look at the car as I was told and sold it as an SE by the dealer. It does have leather with side airbags and electric seats. The sunroof, yes, is an after market one as the switch is on the roof. There are no headlight wipers. I checked a couple of other SE's for sale online and only some had the wipers, so didn't help. If only the HSE models received sub and steer controls then most likely is an SE, though no immediate decals or documentation to say SE anywhere. I'll have to agree that this could be a custom?

Senrta,
PM me your last 6 digits & i will have a look at what LR brought it in as from the UK. That way u can be assured what it is.

From memory the SE tag on 99my's & onward ceased. But will confirm.
Cheers.:)
