View Full Version : The defender wave

Ever since i was about 8 my dad has owned a defender 110 tdi300 95 model, and allways gone on about the "defender wave" and it has allways cracked me up the way that another defender will come roaring along the highway and from behind the wheel is the effortless raise of two fingers. Never a wave to disco or range rover drivers or any other make for that matter, it got to the point where we were out four wheel driving on a well used tellagraph pole track when we met another defender was coming the other way so over we both pulled and out came the beers dad and this guy must have spent more time under each others car sussing out the go then standing on there feet for about an hour. now i have turned 16 bout 6months ago and on my L plates i bought my dads defender of him and he got a 97 model i think, anyway mum was in the passanger seat supervising me on my way to work one day and a defender came the otherway so to keep tradition i raised the two fingers in an effortless wave and one was returned i looked at mum and we both started crackin up laughing. i think it is really cool the way that driving a defender makes you part of a community (if you will) and look forward to my many years of "defender waves" to come.
if you have any story's or thought's pleas post a reply
cheers

Yeah the Land Rover wave is great isn't it! My girlfriend thought i was exceptionally popular when we first started going out because she would always see me waving to a heap of people on the road wherever we travelled! It wasn't till later that i told her that it was the Land Rover wave and i didn't actually know any of them!

I've had people in Land Rovers drive past me on the highway when i've been pulled over in a rest area, then do a U-turn just to have a chat and check out the truck! Land Rover owners are always very easy to approach and have a chat to!

Enjoy your truck!

It's definitely a defender/110/county/series thing... :)

The only time I've had any grief with it was on Fraser Is where there are a heap of defenders as hire vehicles.

Heya kona06 - I have come to realise that owning a Defender is like joining a cult - but in a good way. Everyone else with one is "family". Yep - it's a great feeling of belonging. But not only that - every time I drive ours I end up with a smile on my face - they are just great fun.

Enjoy your Land Rover, mate - as they say, "One Life, Live it". :)

There was a terrible wave misunderstanding on the weekend.

I was in my wagon driving behind a mate in his 110 truck cab along Mill point Road in South Perth and a 130 came theo ther way. he waved at my mate who didn't seem him and got ignored. I waved but he was busy looking at my mates Defender and didn't see me wave. He then waved at me but I was changing gear and by the time i could do the repeat wave he turned away thinking he had been snubbed twice in 15 seconds. He looked a bit sad/miffed.

I wanted to do a Uey and chase him down to clear the air.

It was all my mate's fault. He is a waver normally he just missed it. How do you miss a 130 coming the other way? Not paying enough attention.

i also wave at all defenders when i see them, but sometimes traffic or something else needs my attention more, and if i see i've missed the opportunity to wave i actually feel quite miffed - nothing like waving at a fellow fender/county/series driver and getting it returned

Well, I think it is a landy thing and not just a Defender thing. When I was down in the Monaro over the last week all of the Discos waved and a few stopped to talk. Also in the series everyone you see waves whether landy or not. I even got offered several thousand off a quad bike after the sales person saw I had a disco and they had one too and I pointed out a few things to them.

I often get waves from Disco drivers. Just the other week, approaching Ayers Rock, I got a friendly wave from a lady driving a Disco (with a pair of Lightforces) as she overtook. Didn't get a wave from the Defender 130 further up the road, however.

Ah the Defender wave - got to love it! In the few months I've had my Defender most of the other Defender drivers I come across wave back. :) Other Land Rovers for that matter are another story...haven't yet got a wave out of a Disco, Range Rover or Freelander - they just look at you like you're strange! :o

Well a velodrome is essentially an oval track with banked sides and motorbikes and nas cars race around similar tracks.

But I guess you are right they predominantly refer to bicycles.

I guess I now know who not to wave to :p

I love the wave and i love driving my 110. I think i have only missed a few waves over the past 5 years - i hope they understand.
It is funny/strange and i would like to know how it evolved. I guess i learnt after getting waved 3 times in the first day as a defender owner, so i started to wave back as courtesy and then later found out it is almost compulsory. It is a tradition thing like xmas -you just have to do it unless you are an athiest Toyo driver.

Same here

No Disco driver waves to me. Only my brother but that doesnt count :)

I reckon its awesome. On saturday a red 110 with a tray camper went past on the highway. I caught him at the lights in town. Rolled down the window an said Gday. Noticed he had a Justin Cooper sticker so mentioned it. I think both him and my mate sitting next to me were both just as surprised :o :D

My mate drives a Rodeo. But hes been in the car long enough with me to understand. My old man taught me. And I taught a mate when he bought his Defender. Just the raise of two fingers says it all :)

I new about the wave when i got my Defender as i grew up riding around with dad in his Series 3 and getting waves from anyone who was in a Series/County/Defender.

My mate's who unfortunately for them drive cruiser's and patrols think i am a knob when i tell them about how u belong to this cult when you buy a Defender and the wave is just a reflex when u see another Deefa coming towards u.

There are a couple of county owners in my area that don't wave but everyone else seems to know the unwritten law of the wave

I got the 110 just over a year ago now and the wave became a reflex thing without me even thing instantly. I was slightly miffed that the first wave we got was when my gf was driving. And she was the first one to drive it off road. I'm to good to her!

I always feel a bit miffed when i'm not in the defender and miss out on a wave. Missing the wave makes me feel rude and i apologise to any i have missed.

You have got to love the wave. I always feel dissapointed and let down if I dont get a wave back (I have a defender, despite yet-to-be-changed name).
I often forget what I am driving and wave if I am driving my alfa or even cycling on one occasion, people often look confused when I do...

up here in the NW you get a finger-wave from pretty much everyone once your a couple km out of town, esp. the 4x4 drivers, but when you pass another Defender, you get the full hand salute! - even in town.
i'm living in a caravan park and just got a blue/white roof 110 (300tdi) wagon pulling a van come in to stay about 15m away from us, i'll be over there after work to have a chat. ;)

Hi all,

I am a very enthusiastic Deefer waver, but have noticed of late, that 90% of Puma Defender owners do not wave. I think they need to be educated on the wave, before they drive out of the dealership in their nice, shiny, ripply, new Defenders!

Also used to wave to Discos and Rangies back when I first got into Defenders, but hardly ever got a response, so don't bother any more...

It is a cult, but being a RR owner I now somewhat feel short-changed! I've seen a few P38's getting around Townsville, and of about 8 or 9 i've only managed to get one wave back! Stuck up buggers!

I must admit, most Defenders wave back to me! It's a good thing, just need to work on the Rangies!!

Soon enough my partner and I will be Defender waving (when we're not in the Rangie)!!

Great topic too, well done!

Not the first time I havn't got a wave back from a Puma driver either.

My experience is that most Defender drivers wave - the main exception are (older) farmers in their farm 130's. Ditto for Series drivers. Range Rover drivers - not one yet. Discovery drivers mostly take no notice and don't wave - some are sort of interested but still mainly don't wave.

So I just wave to Defender/County /Series drivers.

However, I do get young kids (eg 10 and under) waving. I've put it down to the fact that Peril is yellow. Kids must think that it's either a fun or cool colour. Or maybe they're playing Spotto.

We continued traveling just after Xmas from Adelaide and have now reached Perth.

Waves from Defers must be close to 100% :D.

While Discos and RRs would have to be nearly zero. So we have stopped paying attention to Discos and their snooty cousins. Rude buggers, might just ignore them and their waves if they are ever stuck beside the road with the bonnet up (not really).

We regularly get waved at by people in other loaded up 4x4s who are also traveling. Doesn't seem to matter so much in these cases as to what you are driving just that you are out and exploring our big beautiful country, which is almost (not quite) as neat as the Landie (read Series and Defender) wave.

Older the landy, the bigger the wave. Drove past an early S1 the other day.. Gave it a big wave and a thumbs up out the window.

A Puma gets a few fingers off the steering wheel and a nod.

You buy a Defender and you are part of the Fraternity The Defender wave is international but it does annoy when it's not reciprocated, I have been getting that from puma drivers mainly think the 130 looked to shabby for em to wave at lol.
Liked the original story I am glad the young bloke had such sense to buy a sterling vehicle as a Defender, now you will be richer by far compared with your mates in their hot hatches, you will learn vehicle mechanics (not out of choice), and also that your mates can go fast but you can go everywhere

Hi,
I had just picked up the new Defender ute from the dealers, had stopped down the road to read the book and set the GPS to get to the boat through all that scary Melbourne traffic and absolute maze of roads.
Just as I was pulling out in to the traffic again . . . . Yea! my first Defender wave from a 130 wagon.

cheers
