Hi all,

I'm 24 and From Sydney, Always been into Old Holdens and had one F100. Now it's time for my first Land Rover.

I've seen all kinds of things in photos with the Old Series Land Rovers (1,2 and 3). I would like a Soft Top but there isn't many around, are the hard tops just bolted on, and therefore come off? in the photos I've seen they don't have roof lining or anything inside and I can see bolts but I'm not sure if they just come out and the roof lifts off. Ofcourse there may be a little more to it then that but is that the basic idea?

Also, I've seen a few of the Land Rover Countys (4 Door), they have a hinge on the front window, does this mean that the window can fall forwards just like the Series? And if so, does the roof also come off those models? I have seen most of the Countys have roof lining, but if I take that out and un-bolt the roof and rear section does that just leave the doors, windows and a ute like tub at rear?

Would greatly appreciate any help, I'm rather new to Landys and just don't know these things.

Thanks.
-Bryan.

The roof unbolts and lift off on all series vehicles. The wagons will leave you with door tops and B pillar to contend with though. Same with the counties. Not sure about the wind screen on the counties.

Welcome to the forum

You don't need to remove the roof lining, leave it alone.

On the series there are bolts above the windscreen top and around the upper walls of the body (behind the B pillar). 30minute job and it's off. You want a series Hardtop mine was regoed as a 3 seater ute with canopy (canopy is the roof);)

The only problem you will find is the seatbelt mounts therefore go for a model older than the seatbelt laws (Series 2 I think) and you will have no problems.

My 1968 IIA was a soft top in the Army (though it did have a dodgy tin-top when in Vietnam).
Then the PO converted it to a Ute + canopy when it left the army (then rolled it, destroying the ute cab).
I restored it as a hardtop
I changed the hardtop to a ute cab for better visibility and CofG offroad.

The guy I sold the hardtop to rolled up in a military SIII with no roof. 3 of us bolted the hardtop down to his landy in about 5 minutes - enough for him to drive home safely anyway.

What's a roof lining? Tee hee! Welcome mate, you can't go wrong with a series Landy, take care, catch you soon. We've got a 76' series 3, they're great! IMHO. :D

The windscreen does fold down on a county/110.

Welcome Bryan. :)

On a SWB Series truck, there are 12 bolts along the windscreen and 6 holding the rear cab section to the tub. Get a mate or two to help you and it can be done comfortably in half an hour or less.

I have pulled the roof off Gus - pics are in this thread in post #4.

I believe the LWB hartop models (troopie type, not the ones with 5 doors) are the same, but with a few more bolts. I am not sure it can be done legally or effectively in a LWB Station Wagon. (this is the one with 5 doors, and not the troopy one)
