What my crappy phone pic doesn;t show, is the mercury bubbleing away in the bottom, along with the glow, that's absolute magic to watch, also the big fan underneath

That is very VERY cool. Must be fantastic to see something like that in operation. I suppose it just looks like a constant glow? Does it emit much UV?

Constant glow with arcing through it:cool:
They have another type of rectifier, that spins at a million miles an hour with a MASSIVE arc over in the briquette factory, (Inever got a photo:mad:) that Siemens contacted them a few years ago, asking them for it, as they wanted to put one in a museum as they're extinct and no longer in use world wide, they were told they couldn;t have it, as they're still in operation:eek:
Dunno about the UV, I ain't getting to close to it, the fugger will pop on me or something nasty will happen, like a black hole/vortex or something:o

Ah you sissy. It's only mercury at 40deg. She pops... well, you are screwed, but you might get a good trip from the vapours!

That is cool.
The sort of thing that you just want to get up close to and stare at all day, but probably not a good idea. Would hate to think of the nasty stuff radiating out of that thing

Back in the '70s Sydney Tech had an old (donated) transmitter (for we kiddos doing our BOCP) which glowed, was an amazing thing to see, and worked too!

They had a M A R at Goulburn TAFE when I was an apprentice and the teach fired it up one day to show us, it was fascinating to watch.
He gave a brief overview of how it worked but I don't remember.
I reckon that if the creators of Doctor Who knew about them there would have been one in the tardis.
