late IIA gearbox number?

a friend is restoring a ex army IIA workshop, and has discovered that there doesnt seem to be a gearbox number stamped anywhere on it..... has pulled it right apart and had it in the parts washer till its spotless, but do you think either of us can find one?

any suggestions?
