I have friends who are on their final leg of their around-the-world trip (Unterwegs mit Susanne + Michi - Home (http://www.grossereise.ch)) and currently sitting in ROMA, QLD (500km west of Brisbane) who have problems with their Defender 300tdi.

The engine is still running and they can drive but there is a humming with higher rev's. Sounds like a turbo issue to me but I have no experience with 300tdi's.

Can anybody let me know if there is a LR enthusiast (or mechanic) with 300tdi knowledge between ROMA, QLD and Brisbane (preferably closer to Roma).

Any help would be greatly appreciated. If you want to offer your help directly to them, their phone number is: 0403950954 (Michael or Susanne will pick up the phone)

Alternatively send me a message via the forum.

Cheers,
Daniel

MR Automotive at Redcliffe will are great. They do emergency parts all the time. You've missed them now but try them Monday 07 3284 6688.

A great many people on this forum swear by them.

Id start with the engine mounts and the front main pully,

but a hum at high revs could be anything from the alternator through to the steering pump as well as the turbo which covers expensive stuff but it could be as simple as the vactuator valve on the air box pulsing with the air flow...

Mulgo,

Just spoke with Susanne, hard to tell what the sound may be but could be something like an exhaust rattle/ pipe bracket etc. I hope thats all it is, it's a bit hard to diagnose over the phone. I mentioned loose tappet/s and /or exhaust manifold leak etc, but again, difficult to know wthout hearing it first hand. Passed on MR's number Captain Rightfoot, and they are headed there on Monday Morning.

Just to let you know that it was the Alternator making that humming. They had to change it. The guys at Redcliffe were really helpful.

Thanks to all of you for your help.

Daniel

That's great to hear. A relatively cheap outcome!
