When making an appointment to re-register a vehicle, what is checked at the Vic Roads inspection? Since you need to take a current RWC with you, I'd have thought no further testing would be required.

Is it wiser/safer to persuade the seller to sell the vehicle with a RWC? If they're unwilling, make a compromise that the buyer needs to obtain and pay for the RWC (inc. any needed parts) and transfer the registration as per normal?

It just seems a PITA to re register a vehicle that has expired reg.

If it's already got a RWC, they check that the VIN numbers match the sales reciept and RWC. For older vehilces with no VIN they check Engine and Chassis numbers. If the vehicle has already been registered with the current engine / chassis, then it will match their records and it will all be straight forward, if you've replaced the engine, you will need a receipt showing who you purchased it off with the engine number on the receipt.

What Michael said and I'll add that it would be wise to take expired rego papers and check yourself the Vin & Engine numbers match before going- preferably before buying too.:)

As I have done this a couple of times with interstate purchased vehicles (200tdi Ute with QLD reg and a 110 Wagon with NSW reg) and about to go through it again with a WA registered vehicle. None of these vehicles had a RWC as I would need to get a Vic RWC in any case. If the vehicle has current interstate registration then it does not need to be inspected. You just need to take the necessary documents RWC, proof of purchase etc to your Vicroads interview and they will take a good deal of money off you and issue new registration and plates.
If it has expired reistration then providing it is not more than 1 or 3 months (cannot remember precise time) then the above applies. If it has long expired registration then it will need to be inspected.

Hope this helps.
