I bought a $75 chinese jobbie off Ebay, I've pretty much cleared my block and it still goes "GGGGGRRRRRRAAAAHHHH.....GGGRRRRAAAHHHH" Really well.
6 months of use and I can easily compare that to $100 a day from the local hire mob:D
I even got to use it on some home renos the other day, pretty soon I'm gonna do a Homer Simpson and use it for everything including changing the channels on the T.V.:D
Hang on...that cost me 3 grand, if the chainsaw gets near that I'll kill it.
I'd better leave it a note before work in the morning, I'd hate for it to get up to no good while i'm at work:eek:

Im a qualified Mechanic, Im the OH&S Rep at work and I have done the course, I have done 2 Chainsaw useage courses 1 for general cutting and 1 for felling, we run 4 Sthil saws, I make all my own chains and have a set up similar to a shop when it comes to saw maintenance.

We have all the safety gear and we use it all the time and if you take a saw out of the shed without the safety gear you get a written warning.

Safety isnt just a joke for cowboys like Rovercare and 953 to flame me over, it's there to save YOU from injury and maybe death.

Yeah it's possible to use a saw without the gear but it's not responsible and no matter what the excuses are it is shear lazyness, short sightedness or false economic reasons why people dont use the safety gear.

A certian coment made by Jim Richards after winning Bathurst comes to mind right now but they already know that and are just posting this rubbish to fire up a reaction.

To answer your queston, Ive looked at it, it is rubbish and I wouldnt own one but there are a couple of people who have bought one that are happy with it and if it were for just pruning light stuff then it may be fine in the hands of an experienced user.

Ive said my peice, fire away....

Hey mate, I tried to get one of those GMC ones as a pruning saw but the guy at Bunnings said they didn't sell GMC stuff any more and any thing else was just clearing the warehouse of GMC stuff. I needed to get the job done and couldn't afford a husky saw so ended up with a Homelite one.

I have to say I am rather impressed. Cost $160-ish and has easily knocked off branches 5 arms thick. It has probbaly had 6 hours or thereabouts of running so far and it has taken a lot of weeds and branches down.

I'm happy with it. And I see absolutely no reason why it is not safer then the Stihl or Husquvarna I was using when I was away. I would prefer a husky but that's another story.

Much like when he fell on me at sheepyard one night, that saved him from landing in the fire though.

That was also Beer induced :D

The funniest thing was watching him trying to walk away to take a leak and he was litterally walking sideways and backward more than forward, took him about 5 mins to walk 3 steps lol :D

Well if my opinion doesnt count thn this bloke has some sort of idea of what he is talking about.

The second one shows how easy it is to stuff up even when your experienced.

There are some interesting injuries on Youtube but I thought it may be just a bit gory for a G rated site.

Doesnt matter what saw brand you have, chainsaws are not a toy in any respect.

No need to antagonise him any further. If/when Matt injures himself with his chainsaw you get the right to say "I told you so" - how's that?

No need for another 10 page thread going over the same stuff.

Just a rule of thumb, the better the welder, the better the weld.

Well really the easier it is to get a better weld.

Im sure it would work for medium duty but with the price of copper I doubt it would have copper windings and is probably steel meaning it will be prone to over heating under heavy work and wont hold a stable current in light work.

For a couple of hundred you can pick up small inverter welders which are a similar size but are a much much better machine to use and is way more versatile.

In general, I am sure you are right - although I doubt anyone winds any transformers with steel - probably aluminium like most, but undersupplied with core and as you indicate, prone to overheating and with poor current regulation. And certainly the inverter types you refer to are better, but then at four times the price they would want to be!

I was not recommending this machine, about which I know little, but just mentioning it. It may well be suitable for occasional light work, although probably not for a beginner.

And for quite a few people, particularly those on superannuation or pensions, the difference between fifty dollars and a couple of hundred is the difference between welder or no welder.

However, I suspect that keeping your eyes open at garage sales etc should bring some excellent bargains for stick welders, a better machine, a lower price, and probably a bunch of rods thrown in.

Yep I agree there that it would probably do the job....at least for a while, I think I basically said that in my original post but I also agree that a garage sale would be a much better place to pick one up or even better, for $50 you could hire an Inverter welder and get a small pack of rods, auto mask and gloves as well as chiping hammer from Kenards for a day but then again it isnt there for that quick tack up for the trailer but if you were to buy a cheap welder and needed to do a bigger job then that may be an option as well.

I know of 3 older type ARC welders that need new homes, 1 I know works ok, 1 isnt working at the moment but was just lose bolts inside that put it out of service and the other is 3 phase WIA which is throwing sparks out at me when I plug it in so I need to find out whats wrong with that one.

The WIA I think we will be keeping (although not much use to me seems I have a MIG and it's not really a portable welder being 3 phase but the other 2 I will probably be getting rid of soon.

I will put up a post when I know more.

Surely fishing in an aquarium gets boring pretty quickly???

In reference to the Bathurst vid. I personally lost most of my interest once the variety was excluded and it became holden vs ford v8s. The days of the mini, the XU1, the Charger, the sierra and the nissans were 1000X more interesting than watching 2 almost identical types of vehicle going round and round for hours...

Rally racing is much more interesting IMHO. Speaking of which - at the perth WRC show races in 2006, I saw a datsun 1400 beat a V8 commodore :D - by a country mile.

Couldn't agree more isuzurover, the dinosaur racing we get now has a very limited lifespan, and all they did by killing off the variety was kill off any chance of holden and ford developing anything that could compete on a world stage.
