looking at a 85 RR this weekend and was wondering what other later model(RR) wheel/tyre combo's will fit. I do not intend going off road as the classic will be mainly used to tow a car trailer on the black top

Geez. Lots of options.
Wheels: Any of the Land Rover 16 " wheels off the Defender/Disco1/RRC. Lots of after market options too. (Disco2/P38a RR and newer no good)
Tyres: Likewise huge choice for HT type.
I quite liked these (http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=300266785665&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT&ih=020). Keep your eye on fleabay as lots come and go.

Also series rims .Some need adjustment to get over the drive member. If fitting larger tyres neg off set comes into the rim options.

the 85 RRC I am going to look at tomorrow already has aftermarket (black rubbery) flairs over cut arches. I have not seen the gaurds up close yet, so I do not know how much cutting was done
paul
PS is PCD and offset different ?? to late model

The PCD on your 85RR is different from the P38 and the Disco 2:cool:

Has anyone gone over 29" and not had to cut the guards or install a lift kit?
I already run 225/75 R16 on my 1985 RRc which is 29.3" and was wondering if there was anything a little larger I could run without cutting or lifting anything.

Diana This will depend if a spoiler is fitted, width and offset of rims you have.

No spoiler, a regular Phase 2 Hi-Line RRc with uprated rear coils and Defender xtreme alloys from the late 1990's as in the attached pic (not mine though)

I'm running 7.50R16s (about 31"s) with standard spec suspension / no lift kit / no cutting / standard RR wheels.
The front edges of the rear wheel arches have been dressed (folded over the sharp flange) but that's all.
It rubs slightly at times on extreme articulation but that's easy to live with.
