Turned a sharp bend this morning (well tight for the Defender anyway) and heard the PAS pump protest as the steering went to full lock.

I've heard that noise before on the Disco as the pump was failing.

Stopped and popped the bonnet expecting to see the engine compartment sprayed with fluid...all good.:)

Checked the reservoir...not so good nearly empty :(

Checked under...pipes all intact and in place but evidence of PS Fluid on the pipe from the pump to the steering box. Jiggled it a bit and found that the nut attaching the metal section of the pipe where it meets the underside of the pump was loose. Tightened it up, topped up the fluid reservoir and all is good again.

So why should this be so? 6700 km about 2000 of which have been on rough roads and/or the morning and afternoon drive into and out of the office car park most of which is done at close to full steering lock. Or maybe Friday afternoon on the assembly line in Solihull?

Fortunately no damage done. Might be worth others having a look at theirs. It's easy to check and tighten. The pump is located low down on the passenger side of the engine and a damn sight easier than the 300Tdi to get at.

Hi Mahn, My 110 dumped all its fluid out of the same fitting last Thursday. I had to get it trucked into LR to get the oil topped up, (after the fitting was tightened up!), after which I swiped the rest of the bottle of PAS fluid off the dealer.
I've done nearly 16000kms in my Defender, so like you said it's a bit strange for it to come loose all of a sudden.
Just another thing to check I guess, along with the prop shaft nuts, the sway bar nuts, the little bolt on the turbo heat sheild.......

Cheers,

Tim

Hi Simon, could be.... I'm not too sure what the "loctite and hydraulic systems" rules are though???? I think if my one comes loose again I might look at using lockwire, although I'd prefer to see a fix from LR.

Cheers,

Tim

My farmer friend (UK) just bought a 09 110 Hi Cap to replace his 10 yr old 180,000 Mile 110 (which he has decided to keep too)....after 150 miles the 09' also did exactly as yours....I was there when the LR assist showed up and i asked him why this was such a common problem, and he replied ''i don't know i fixed hundreds of them'.....why not use a little Loctite. Surely it would be more cost effective?

For better or for worse I used this:

Penrite PAS Fluid:

A google search for the Texaco product only found a link to AULRO and a Russian site

Yep that's what I came up with too, except the AULRO link wasn't there until I posted the question:cool:

I think I'll talk to a dealer this week and see what they use. The Penrite you got appears to be for D2 PS & ACE. At this stage all I know is its a different spec number to the one mentioned for the Puma. This may not be an issue though. I suspect the dealers are using a Castrol fluid, as everything else is Castrol, just need to find out what though.

The good thing is that I have access to Penrite and Castrol in town, so I can order it in easily :)

I don't think many of the guys at Solihull watch baseball, more chance of a football game being the problem;)
I'm glad you got the idea though:p
