G'day All, Can anyone tell me if the Series wheel bearings and the type that fit the early 110's (Nov 84) are the same???? I have a feeling that they are different can someone confirm that for me cheers Dennis:angel:

According to my information, the wheel bearings changed during Series 3 production in late 1980, to the same as the ones in the Stage 1. I am pretty certain these bearings remained the same in the early 110, and are probably the same as the RR classic, possibly remaining the same in Defender, at least until the change to grease lubricated bearings.

So there is no simple answer to your question - I believe the answer is the early 110 are the same as late Series 3 but different to most Series production.

From memory (been a while since I had to change a sereis wheel bearing)

they change when the drive member in the swivel changed from a UJ to a CV.

Not according to my information - certainly they changed from the ordinary S3 to the Stage 1 - but the same change was made from October 1980 on the standard S3 with U-joints not CV joints.

that I recall IVe never worked on a series thats newer than about 78.... easy enough to miss the late change in the series...

I wouldnt be surprised if it was a fleet wide change/supercedance on a drop date that marries up with the intro of the stage 1's.

The parts book gives October 1980, Stage 1 was in 1979 wasn't it? And all of them had the later bearings.

Of course, there is always the complication that the complete axle or even just the stub axle with hub and bearings are interchangeable right back to the first Series 2 (stub axle assembly back to S1 86), so there is no guarantee that what is on your Series Landrover was what it had when built.

I thought they were in 1980 and the preproduction "trial it and use up parts" ones were the ones done earlier.

CBC and/or SKF/BSC will have complete listings and interchanges. Give them your vehicle info and they can tell you the part# and what other vehicles they suit. At least one of the companies abovewill be able to advise the differences/ changes between the models such as dimensions and load rating capability and offer alternative fittings if available.

If you just give them a bearing number they wont have any issue matching or offering alternatives but wont be keen to take the time to list what equipment they fit.

Cheers
