Does anybody have any experiance with a Uniden Sundowner UH001 UHF radio? Mine is missing the microphone. I need to know if it is meant to have a carbon or dynamic microphone. Any advice would be appreciated.

Been using several of them for over fifteen years, but I have never had to pull a microphone apart - however, I'm pretty certain they are dynamic. They are a well enough known brand that any of the suppliers should be able to sell you the correct one. Dick Smith used to sell that model, so should have the right replacement.

i recently i went to dick smiths to replace my uniden mic. its a no go.
they only stock a total of....wait for it....... 1 mic for all cb's
convienently not for my uniden uh088
therefore no a large range to choose from. tandy may also stock mic's buy i found going to a truck accessories place was the go...there where many to choose from

Both Dick Smith Electronics and Tandys are owned by Woolworths. If Dick Smith Electronics won't sell it, I wouldn't expext Tandys to.

They look to be a pretty old set. If you could get the wiring diagram and pinouts we could tell you if a mic from another set would work.
Then there's the chance you could go to all the trouble of getting a mic and the radio is not working anyway. ( or will fail pretty soon ).
You can pick up a basic model new UHF CB for a coupla hundred bucks these days (with warranty) - may be worth considering.

Extremely unlikely to be a carbon mike. Almost certainly a dynamic. I'd bet your left one on it.
I assume it has the standard 4-pin mike plug.

Almost any CB radio mike would probably work. Got an old 27MHz AM set from which you can steal the mike to try?

I visited the Uniden website to download the manual. It was not there. The website said to E-Mail them if you needed a manual that was not on the website. I did this, and the response that I got was to download it from the website. I then replied to tell them that it was not on their website.
I bought the radio for $5 at a clearing sale, so the financial risk was small. The radio receives well, and transmits a good carrier wave. I tried a dynamic microphone. The modulation was weak, just audible at full volume on the receiving set. This led me to suspect that I had used a dynamic microphone on a set designed for a carbon microphone. I assumed that the dynamic microphone was generating a small voltage, which would adjust the current that would normally flow through the carbon microphone, but to a lesser extent than the carbon microphone. Hence the low modulation.
I have now found out that the unit is meant to have a dynamic microphone, so the above is a nice theory, but not applicable in this situation. I will now upen the set up and see if I can find a burnt out audio transformer, or anything else that looks suspicious.
