We are planning to pack our bags and ship the Fender to Tassie just after a Melbourne Christmas with family

I have a brother in Hobart and NYE will be spent there but for two or three weeks we will be exploring.

What do you suggest as some interesting not too challenging drives?

exploroz.com.au has some suggestions.

Maybe also there might be an opportunity to catch up with some Aulroians...

Channel Highway and down to Smug, I mean Snug:p and further on to Dover.

Just remember to pack the winter woolies. Always knew it was cold when we woke up to a weather report of "snow to sea level". And that was in December when we lived down there:eek:

Make sure you get in touch when down here. 6229 1102 (W) and 0408 995 635 (M)

Where in Hobart is your Brother? Is he a LR owner too?

It'll be good to meet you, hopefully some day trips out can be organised with a few of us:D:)

I priced the fares for a 4x4 and it was about $2000 return for vehicle and two people. Is that about right or am i doing somehting wrong?

It does depend on the cabin and the season. A deluxe cabin during peak will cost $451 each person each way plus the vehicle say $60 each way so $2000 is about right on that basis. but if you travel the next rung down it is $1600.

Thanks for the contact Nos. Justin I'll look you up :)

My brother works for the CSIRO and lives nearby work although he has just bought a block of dirt with a shed 40 minutes north of Hobart. He drives a Suzuki Jimny that has taken him through a lot of WA when he lived there. The Land Rover Gene passed him by.

Hi Mahn, some of the places we went were, Huon Valley, Dip Falls, The Nut, Styx Forest, St Helens and the Bay of Fires, on your way near St Marys, stop at The Mt Elephant Pancake Barn mmmmmmmmmm.

Where to go depends on what you are interested in seeing. Queenstown and strahn are nice spots with olenty of history and areas to explore. THe devil's gates and ocean beach are worth a drive for a look see in the flesh (easy 4wd country ostly unless you go too far up the beach). The spray tunnel at zeehan is also worth a visit if you will fit down the tunnel. I'm a fan of the west coast though.

East coast you have bay of fires, freycenet, maria island and so on. there is some nice camping in the bay of fires and friendly beaches area. A walk to diamond island at bicheno at low tide is worthwhile to check out the penguins.

In the north i'm in launnie, let me know if you are in town for a beer or a meal at the pub (I would have SWMBO and the little one in tow). The gorge is worth a look if you are in town, and there are some nice wineries around the tamar valley. Ben lomond is worth a look if you are in the area as well. But not usually snow in winter, but jacobs ladder has to be one of the more spectacular pieces of road in the country (approx 1 hour from launceston each way, good for a day trip).

Down south there is plenty to see, but i'll leave that to the southerners! I enjoy bruny island so I think that's worth a few days for a look around.

Thanks Phoenix it would be good to meet you.

Is that gorge "the Levin"? I have an oil painting of that gorge that I bought nearly 30 years ago and hangs in my dining room. I've always wanted to see it for real. :)

The Leven Canyon is at a town called Ulverstone, about 150km from Launceston.

Gday mate

Im in Launceston as well.

I would suggest getting yourself a copy of Offroad Tasmania

Off-road Tasmania Guidebook (http://www.roving.com.au/)

You even get a cool sticker :D which takes ages to put on properly ;)

It shows quite a few tracks about the place

If you come up to Launceston, maybe you would be tempted into a light drive on the dunes of Bridport (hour an a half from Launceston, nice little town by the sea) :) I know Phoenix did the trip a while ago.

http://www.aulro.com/afvb/tasmanian-reports/22521-sun-6-march-2005-bridport-bellingham-pics-warning.html

Or a trip out to Naurawntapu National Park. There are some fire trails that offer excellent views of the sea

Might catch up with you :)

Ask Him if He knows Keith Hayes and Andy Revill, they are both Landy nuts who work for the CSIRO also.

Too bad about the Landy gene, but I seem to remember something from my genetics studies a Looong time ago that someones genetic makeup CAN be influenced by ENVIRONMENT, so all you have to do to get his genes back on track is buy him a landy, and get him to spend ALL his time in it, so when he has kids, they MIGHT just get a tilt towards the landrover due to some underlying 'genetic ghosting' effect.

Just a thought:D

I will ask Phillip about those chaps. As for genetics that's his area...alleles and bottleneck populations and stuff...mainly conservation genetics.

I have two cousins who carry the Landy gene (on my mother's side). As for buying Bros a Land Rover he'll have to fend for himself as my Discovery is going to one of the two cousins (he'll then own three).

The gorge I was refering to is the cararact gorge. The levin canyon is pretty as well, although last time I was there I was kayaking it and paying mroe attention to staying upright. Actually that was a lot of years ago!!

My series 3 isn't in off roading condition at the moment (Axle problems, I'm about to do another post about that elsewhere) but I can always borow dad's D2 or V8 county :D

We set off first thing tomorrow. :D and will probably be out of touch forumwise until January 10.

We look forward to catching up with some Aulroians in Tassie.

But if you see a white Defender with AULRO plates on the Hume Highway to Melbourne be sure to wave.

The car is half packed so I'd better get on.

Have a happy and safe Christmas everyone.
