...it's been there a while, but it's getting worse/more noticeable...
Turn the key to the glow plug position and it sounds like someone has just trapped a cat inside a set of bagpipes.
Is it the centrifugal filter spinning up? If so, didn't know it operated prior to starting.
Once running the sound continues but then declines, or I could just lose it in the road/running noise.
Cheers

Sounds more like the fuel pump to me, possibly with air in the system.
Does it sound as if it is coming from the rear of the car?

Sorry should have said...definately engine bay. I had thought about that too.

My d1 started doing this after I had a dual battery system fitted. I put it down to the solenoid activating and making a noise. The system that was fitted to mine by the auto elec was a simple solenoid that had to be placed upside down for some reason and it seems to get louder after driving in dusty conditions. If you don't have a dual battery system then I don't know????

Have you noticed a fuel leak at the rear of the engine?
Baz.

Yep, have a dual battery system, but... have no idea what it is or where. Asked my workshop when I first bought the car and they said they weren't too sure as it had been very well plumbed in and tucked away somewhere "a very tidy job"... but will no doubt be a bar-steward if I need to fix it :(.

Hey Baz
No fuel leaks that I'm aware of... what are you thinking of?

The centrifugal filter is spun by oil pressure when the engine is running, so its not that.
the only thing that runs with ignition in position 2 is the fuel pump.
The reason you was aksed ref fuel leak, is because if the fuel pressure regulator is leaking (common problem) it "may" allow air into the system in which case the fuel pump would be more noisy as it "cavitates" the air in the fuel lines.
To eliminate the fuel pump, pull Fuse 10 from the engine compartment fuse box (fuel pump) and then switch to ignition position 2, If its then quiet, then it is the fuel pump as already suspected.
The TD5 fuel pumps are known to fail, it usually gets noisy for a while and then packs up completely

Thanks UP
I'll pull the fuse on the weekend and see what happens...

I think I might have the same noise, but i've had it since I bought the car at 90000km, and at nearly 240000kms its still doing that. Is there anyway to fix this before it packs up and leave me stranded on the side of the road?

Yep what UP said is what i was hinting at.

Check for the leak in the fuel regulator and also change your filter first, it may only be a clogged filter or possibly the filter isn't on tight enough, or in some cases the small O ring on top of the filter can stick to the filter housing and when you put the new filter on it won't seal properly causing a gap and this will make your pump scream a lot louder.
I'd most likely say it's the fuel regulator.

odd noises I usually just put the handle end of a very large screw driver to my ear and the metal tip some where near the noise. Then repeat till it gets louder. Eventually you'll find where its coming from.
and BTW don't laugh it works !

Oh I know! My dad used to run a service station back in the 70's (when they actually serviced cars ;) ) and he used to call it the "mechanic's stethoscope".

Well pulled the fuse to be met with just the click of the glow plug relay - so it is definitely the fuel pump - or related. I'll try changing the filter etc as you suggested Baz and see if that makes any difference.
I hope so, as I assume anything to do with the pump will be large wads of cash...
Cheers

At least on a D2 there is an access panel in the rear floor to change the pump. There isnt on a Defender so you have to drop the tank.
Good luck.
