Well Im proper exited now... Just 2 days left before I head for Darwin and a months adventure - hoping to meet some of you fellas en-route.
Problem is weve had 2 hard frosts over night and the maximum daily temperature is about 5C. Weather forecast says 2 more days of the same freezing nights and similar daily temps.
It looks like I'll spend Friday freezing my nuts off waiting on train platforms to get to London, only to be greeted by million degree sunshine and humidity in Darwin... Grrrreat - a real temperature shock to the body as well as jet lag!
I was hoping for nice 20C English days before I left, to ease the temperature shock...no such luck! Still, looking on the bright side, its just 48hrs of hassle for a months holiday doing what I love.:D:D

We are lucky to see 28C here in the peak on summer, let alone a "cold" evening...

You ride a bike in winter?
Yep... I've been known to turn up to work looking like 'Frosty the Snowman' before now!! :D
The only time I don't, is usually when there's heavy snow. Mind you, for obvious reasons, I tend to stick to the main trunk roads in winter.

I dont do motor-bikes but winter over here is the best time for mountain biking - which I do a lot of...
Deep snow is problematic (obviously), but apart from that and the cold its a great challenge.

I couldn't ride in your winters.
Having said that, I've just been talking on the Two Wheels forum about selling the XJR1300 as it's now coming on to summer so it's far too hot to ride (with leathers - and I won't ride without protection). The 42 deg summers are just a tad warm.

Just got back from the Wharf and it was a lovely night.... not a cloud in the sky. The forecasted showers are what the Bureau calls "scattered" showers, ie somewhere within a 500k radius of Darwin there might be a little bit of rain.
Here is the Web address in case you want to let others know how you will be suffering when they are rugged up in their winter woolies.

Don't know what his program is and how long he will be in Darwin, after leaving "sunny???" England he will probably need a week to recover here before he takes off, also the vehicle will have to be packed and I believe that will be a job.
Yorkshire_Jon

Program??? Whats one of those!!!
Spend a week in Darwin recovering... Cant afford that!!
Vehicle is already packed... Just needs my rucksack throwing in and a mozzi tent (for me) buying.
The rough plan is to get to Darwin and recover for a day or two (or three), then head south...

Hi Jon
errrrr sorry to say this but Barbara has persuaded me to fly back to the UK with her on Saturday
Calm down now, wipe that spilt coffee up. Will not leave the 110 in Lewys hands for too long! Otherwise the good bits would be transplanted into his. I.e. number plates swopped over! :p
See you on Saturday.
Don't believe the stories about lack of room in 110. It just needs another sort out
Dullbird is based in Sydney.
Any scenic route suggestions for Darwin to Alice Springs?

He is NOT blaming me. I didn't do it.
And don't you worry about the suntan lotion, there are a few bottles of Factor 50 in the 110 as I get it for nowt and somehow I don't think I'll be needing it in sunny Yorkshire for a bit.
As for beer, I think having seen his Nibs new improved beer gut, it should be some Clausthaller.:D

Ummmm... Stuart Highway :lol2:
Or you can go to Katherine and take the Victoria Highway and go via Broome, Perth, Kalgoorlie, Port Augusta and Coober Pedy to get to Alice Springs. Although its a tad longer route :Rolling:

Is that still the case?

not necessarily true - depends on what you drink... Singapore has about 30x the range of Darwin as well...

Not good news on that score, I tried to buy a bottle of decent malt before I flew out to Oz in July and they wouldn't sell me any. Apparently you can't catch a connecting flight into Oz with more than 200mls (or thereabouts) of liquid on you. The chappie in the Duty Free shop at Heathrow, told me he had seen grown men close to tears when he told them that. I suppose I might have been able to get some in Incheon but the Koreans don't strike me as single malt brewers. So I ended up buying a bottle on the flight from Incheon to Sydney and probably paid thru the nose for it.
If I had known that I would have packed one of the many bottles of malt chucking around the house in my suitcase.

Yes there was a case recently of a passenger having his bottles of vintage Penfolds Grange taken off him at an Australian airport and destroyed

ok both cases are due to one factor - the volume of liquids/gels allowed is a total of 1 litre with no individual bottle exceeding 100mls - even a 200ml bottle that is 75% used cannot be allowed in. This includes all perfume, shampoo, liquid soaps, saving cream, deodorant, alcohol, even drinking water etc... and the total carried cannot exceed 1000mls. http://www.customs.gov.au/webdata/resources/files/GuideForTravellers.pdf
However, if you buy duty free and they SEAL THE BAG COMPLETELY at the point of sale you can hand carry 1 litre of spirits, wine etc per person... The critical point being the sealed bag. You cannot bring duty paid alcohol, shampoo, soap or whatever into Australia in your hand luggage in packs of greater than 100mls. You can bring in as much as you like in your checked luggage, but you will have to pay duty on the extra volume above the duty free allowance upon arrival. Simple enough
