I know everyone's different, that you can't get on with everyone, but I just wanted to say what a good bunch you are. I have really enjoyed aulro and the sense of a common bond - taking a shot at someone else rarely seems to come into it, mostly it's about the vehicles and our experiences . Now watch, I'm gunna get flamed on aulro! :D

Just joined a forum for another brand of car, one I have bought for my wife. Some are okay, but others are a grumpy lot and there is thread upon thread of people having a go at each other.

I just put up a thread about the progress I was making fixing a few problems with my wife's car, thinking there was no info on the forum about the problem when I went looking and maybe it might be useful to someone else in the future.

I was flamed for it!

It isn't the first time on that forum, so now I reckon I'll just leave them to it, and de-register myself before I respond with something I will regret. It's a shame, cos that's why I join these forums, is to find out info about a common interest. Why waste time having a go at people?

its not just the forum it tends to be in real life as well.

just by the by why not post up the questions about the other car here, just be sure to mark it as Non LR related you never know we might just be able to answer that too.

cheers.

It might have something to do with us having to stick together and support each other as the LR agents rarely do:o

or it could be our regal define bearing:D:D:D

Well the moderators do their job here at times and when needed... Overall it's a friendly bunch of people with a common interest, which I must say extends to helping people out with more things than just their landies.

Throw your question about your wife's car here - there's some pretty broadly knowledgeable mechanic types floating about.

Sure is a great place, almost like a home away from home. For sure I have butted heads on occasions with a few:angel:, but normally it is done and dusted and pretty much would have a beer with any of them....bar one....but they are no longer on the forum . Besides unless you meet someone face to face you can never truly judge someone on here, one of the guys in our club when I first went along, based on here I thought he was late 30's early 40's.....he was 22. Boy I could tell some stories about internet dating as well ............but I digress.

I have learnt more about 4WD's etc on here just from the expertise and knowledge of so many, which is valuable to the non mechanic types like myself. Even on things around the house.....cleaning concrete....changing a tap.....chainsaws ( hmm leave that one alone)....I come back to SWMBO proud as punch as I found the way to deal with the issue from someone/s knowledge from here. I pop into other forums and it just isnt the same, we may have our meltdowns here on the odd occasion...on some sites its a daily event. The camaraderie here is second to none and hence why I wear my AULRO stickers on my D2 with pride and thats because of the folks that visit here.

yeah its funny how some people have nothing better to do but be arrogant and the majority of them turn out to be a bit less opinionated when confronted face to face not behind a keyboard but this crew do have a more respectable nature

The company I work for is wrestling with how it should be sharing the knowledge accumulated on its projects across a range of disciplines, civil, mining, building and services. It has established what it calls Communities of Practice...it hasn't really taken off. I have often used this place as an example of how a community can work.

What is required is passion, commitment and the willingness to share knowledge selflessly and respectfully. These are the cultural values that make the difference. Without them then this place would just be like some others...a repository for baseless opinion and agro.

I wear my plates with pride :D

I have found that sometimes what you write doesn't say what you mean which causes some people to take it the wrong way and not seeing peoples faces can make it hard to know when their taking the miky but looking over at some of the other forums there seems to be people who do think they are god and rubbish everyone who doesn't tow the line or if a person wants some technical advice everyone else just bags them because they have a problem, generally followed by my blah blah's done 500,000 miles and never missed a beat because I change my wiper washer water every 5000k's.For me I haven't joined another forum and I doubt I will. I concur....for sure in some instances it is pretty clear, other times it can be interpreted differently.....hell I have had it with family members with email...hence why now all "topical" type correspondence is done over the phone or face to face.....so it is easy to imagine how things can get misread here,

I think it has a lot to do with the fact the site is independently run ie not by a mag or someone with a vested interest. The structure of the site allows for paid adverts and some commercial activity but it is all quite separate from the knowledge sharing.

Couple that with the fact there are a significant number of people who contribute financially and we all have an interest in focusing on what actually matters.

And there is nothing like having a common enemy to bind people together.

I have found that sometimes what you write doesn't say what you mean which causes some people to take it the wrong way and not seeing peoples faces can make it hard to know when their taking the miky. PatSo true Pat. I kept thinking maybe I was not reading the comments correctly, and maybe I was being over-sensitive. But then the tone was there in quite a few responses - at first I thought it was just me, but they kept coming. I really began to wonder why I was attracting such rudeness - it really doesn't happen on aulro.

The last one was where I mentioned that I had found some aftermarket supply sources, but I failed to mention who they were ( mainly cos I was unsure of the site's sponsorship arrangements, maybe it was not done to mention other suppliers). I was asked if I was going to keep that information for my own secret society or did I care to share it with anyone else. It was said with that language and that tone, which is smart-ass at worst and plain rude at best.

I always find that when people (including me!) have a go or lash out at someone else, it is usually because they are uncomfortable with themselves, it is rarely about anyone else.

The smiley faces that the site has, (like this one has), can help a lot when you are trying to be funny but don't know the person or are unsure how it will be taken...
