G'day everyone,
I'm wanting to know about any changes that were made between early and late series III gearboxes. Bear with me here.........
I have a 1972 SIII ute, which is in need of some gearbox attention. It is fitted with a 186, and the gearbox that came with the car was quite good, only giving a bit of a crunch if the change to 2nd was rushed, and the stick moved back to far (if that makes sense) and a deep rumble if loaded up at low revs in 2nd gear. Not perfect, but quite good. Unfortunatley, a friend :wasntme:(i use the term loosely), broke a few teeth off reverse gear.
In a rush to get the ute back and going, it ended up with a spare box from a diesel fitted, which turned out to be a terrible 'box. Jumping out of low range and 1st gear, worn synchro, the works.
What i would like to know, now that time is back on my side, is which one I am better of rebuilding, if there is any difference at all.
The original gearbox has the no. 94101136 A stamped into the gearbox itself, while the 2nd one has 90268874 A, stamped into the t/fer case.
Any advice would be very very welcome.

You would be talking about a suffix D box then, if you were going to rebuild the one you have it should give you years of service and you wouldn't have to outlay the cost on another box. Talk to Gary at CLR he has NOS gearbox parts at the moment.

ok, so no difference between the 2 'boxes? Looks like i'll be putting bearings, seals etc and having a look at synchros in the original gearbox and slotting it back in. Thanks for the advice!!

Well I wouldn't say no difference just not worth the extra cost. One option if you wanted to you could use suffix D internals if you are rebuilding anyway or maybe a transfer box conversion if the budget permits

ok thats fine I think i'll get the original box apart and go right through it. I don't think i'll worry too much about suffix D internals, seeing as the vast majoirty of it held up beautifully (as you said it would). Budget is fairly low at the moment (ok most of the time its too low), so a high speed t/fer is on the cards, but still a while off. Thanks again for the advice!!
